It lies on the eastern edge of the Central Valley and is bordered by Stockton to the north, Modesto to the east, Merced to the south and Fresno to the west. The name "Hawthorne" originated from two nearby settlements: Hawthorne Heights and Hawthorne Prairie. The first settlement was established in 1851 as a result of gold discoveries in Nevada and it bore that name until 1884 when it changed to its current form because of copyright issues with Nathaniel Hawthornes novel "The House With Two Curtain Walls". Hawthorne had a post office from 1855 until 1907. The first store in Hawthorne opened in 1865 on Main Street between Second and Third Streets; it became an independent store Again from 1907 until 1951 when it merged into the Mercantile Exchange grocery store chain which also included First National Bank. In 1951, Mercantile Exchange closed its doors for good after more than 150 years of operations in Hawthorne. Today there are only three remaining buildings from that era including one still standing on Main Street which serves as a museum today.
