Today, Hawthorne is home to one of the largest roasting companies in the region and continues to be an important node in the coffee industry. The first espresso machine was made in Hawthorne by Angelo Morioni and his brother Pietro. The Morioni family operated their own business from 1875 until 1926. It was here that Michele Rizzoli developed his famous Italian espresso machines. In 1922, Giovanni D’Angelo founded D’Angelo Coffee Company, which became one of the most prestigious roasters in America. Along with his son Roberto, Giovanni created what is considered to be the first modern summary coffee machine – the RDJ-1A in 1948. In 1951, Harry Nyquist joined forces with Don Costa Mesa to start Costa Mesa Coffee Corporation. This company would become one of America’s leading coffee companies and continue production until its merger with Starbucks in 2006. The first cups of Costa Mesa Coffee were roasted at San José State University’s School of Coffee Science & Technology (now part of Starbucks) on December 3rd, 1951. At this time, cafés all around America began serving Costa Rican blends as well as Americano coffees from Hearst Castle roastings located nearby on Stockton Street near San Francisco General Hospital (then called Straight Street). Today, Hawthorne remains an important node for coffee production and boasts some of the highest quality beans available anywhere within its boundaries – surpassing even those found at Rincon de la Téléphone plantation on Java Island off Santa Cruz County (near Monterey), where many fine Americano cafes are located today!

Hawthorne's history begins with its establishment as a small farming village on the banks of the Kern River in what is now eastern Kern County. The original settlers were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1847 and built a chapel and Storehouse on Prospect Street near present-day Hawthorne High School. By 1850, there were only six families living in Hawthorne; all but one had come from New England. In 1860, when Californians began arrive through los angeles search for new landmass to settle,[1] several families decided to move into what is now eastern Kern County because of its rich gold fields[2]. By 1870, most of theVillage had been destroyed by fire or war,[3] but some homes still stand today including those built by James Hickey (1853-1912) who operated an sawmill hereabouts.[4] The next few yearssaw some rapid growth thanks to increased water usage from nearby farms and mines as well as construction within walking distance of town center: “a series of new blocks [were] laid out between 1880 and 1890” which included streets such as Franklin Street (later renamed Main Street), Fourth Street (later renamed Broadway), Center Street (later renamed Patton Boulevard), Grand Avenue (now known as McCullough Avenue) and more than 50 other streets across northwestern Kern County[5]. This period also saw various types of commercial development such as a livery stable/marketplace along Harrison street called Gilded Angel which became known locally for its furnishings then exported worldwide; two stores - One founded by Wm J Atherton & Bros., later Penney’s - opened at Third and Harrison Streets soon afterwards; lumberyards started up around Prospect Square; numerous residences were erected either alone or adjacent to businesses...the downtown core rapidly filled with people looking for work opportunities despite periodic drought conditions”[]6 In additionHickey constructed two large schools – one on First St NW corner Powell Blvd opposite modern day United States Post Office while other existing buildings served both boys high school grades thru 1922 until it closed due To lack Of students During this time many social activities took place like dances at Mrs Churchwell’s house held every Saturday night followed by refreshments before going home In 1903 they changed their name to “Hawthornes” after their current location
Hawthorne is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 34,405 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula and is adjacent to Walnut Creek. Hawthorne has a rich history dating back to 1848 when it was known as simply "Havasu". In 1853, George W. Fuller purchased lands in what would become Hawthorne from John Sloan and others who had bought land along the coast of southern California. In 1860, Fuller built his home, "Fenimore House" which still stands today. He also developed a small town around his house called Hawthorne Heights which later became part of Berkeley. The town consisted of simple log buildings that were surrounded by a large wooded area. Eventually, development outside of town led to the abandonment of Hawthorne Heights and its inhabitants relocated to Berkeley or other parts of Contra Costa County during the late 19th century and early 20th century.
