In 1853, he donated land for the first steam power plant in Daly City that led to creation of Palo Alto (then part of San Jose). In 1865, he became one of the initial incorporators of Berkeley (now Berkeley), and served as its first mayor. After years spent working hard at various businesses and civic organizations throughout his life including being president (1892–1895) and treasurer (1901–1903), George died suddenly at home on July 6th, 1903 at age 73 years old leaving behind an estate worth $5 million dollars ($100 million today). Hayward was founded in 1876 by John Hayward and his wife, Anna Maria. The first post office in Hayward opened in 1878. In 1896, the city was incorporated as a city with a population of 2,500 people. The population grew to over 12,000 within 10 years and reached its current size of over 20,000 in 2000.

The USAF is deploying a new gift program that offers servicemen and women the opportunity to receive unique items and experiences from service members all over the world. The program is called "Air Force Deployed Gift." To participate in Air Force Deployed Gift, you must be a member of the USAF and have reached your armed forces expiration date. You will then be required to complete an online survey that will provide you with information about the gift program. Once you have completed the survey, you will be able to choose which gifts to receive. There are three different gift options available: 1) A travel voucher for an airfare and hotel stay in any country where service members are deployed; 2) A physical item such as a book or toy; or 3) An experience such as being given tours of duty locations or spending time at military bases. There are several restrictions that apply when it comes to Air Force Deployed Gift: 1) You cannot select items that are Alreadyowned by someone else in your unit. 2) Your unit must consent before receiving any gifts from outside of your unit. If they do not consent, then no gifts can be sent out. 3) You may only receive one type of gift per year (this includes Air Force deployable items).
