The first Europeans who visited Hayward were Jesuit missionaries led by Father Junípero Serra in 1847-48. They founded a settlement called Mission San Francisco de Asís on land grant from Spain. The area now known as Hayward was part of Rancho Rinconada which was granted in 1847 to José Joaquín Mora y Valdés. In 1853, David Woolridge purchased 5 square miles (12 km²) of present-day Hayward from Valdés for $3 per acre ($0.50 per hectare). He named it Woolridge Heights after himself and erected a modest home there near what is now downtown Hayward. In 1865, Jens Jensen became proprietor of an sawmill and gristmill on White Oak Creek west of Hayward Airport. He started production that year with eleven acres (4 ha) of land above water level; it grew into an empire with over one hundred acres (40 ha) today producing lumber, paper products and other goods until 1990 when it went bankrupt due to overcapacity caused by growth in Asia.
