In 1916, Alfred Peet joined the business and it became known as Alfred Peet & Sons. The company grew rapidly during World War II and produced over one million pounds of coffee per day. In 1960, the company merged with two other companies - National Roasters and Holland America Line - to become United States Coffee Corporation (USC). USC continued to produce large quantities of coffee until it was acquired by Jardin National Frutos SA in 1997.
Hayward, California is a small town in Sonoma County, California. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay. Hayward was founded by two brothers in 1849 as a sawmill settlement. In 1870, it became an agricultural center with a flourmill and bakery. The city's industry shifted to aircraft manufacturing during World War II and then to electronic technology after that war. Hayward became one of Northern California's most affluent cities with its high-end shopping malls and large homes until the early 21st century when housing prices began to decline in the city and statewide values increased. The history of Hayward goes back more than 100 years and it has been known for its wine production since 1868 when Elisha Cuthbert President of the American Vinegar Company started making white wine from Mission grapes in his home garage. Today’s winemaking takes place at several dozen vineyards throughout Hayward County including Riesling producer Willi Straub; red/white blends made with Mendocino Coast wines such as Temescal; Chardonnay made from Napa Valley Shirazes; Pinot Noir from Zinfandel vines near Livermore; Cabernet Sauvignon from Petaluma & Rutherford Glen vineyards near Antioch; Gewürztraminer from Bavarian Castle vineyards near Heidelberg; Sauvignon Blanc from Hermitage Vineyards below Sausalito; Blaufranken Sancerre from Graefenberg Vineyard near Big Sur
Fresh roasted coffee has a long and varied history. The first coffee beans were grown in Sumatra in the Indonesian archipelago, where the sun dried the beans. Coffee was then traded across Asia through slavery and then to Europe. In 1795, Dutch traders discovered Java and began trading with Indonesia. They soon realized that there was great potential for coffee farming in this newly discovered land. In 1817, Dutch traders reached Java and discovered that roasting coffee would create a better flavor than grinding it fresh. They started roasting their own beans and selling them to other traders around the world. By 1830, roast quality had improved so much that Dutch traders started buying back their own beans from other traders to improve quality further. Between 1830 and 1840, several different methods of roasting were developed including direct exposure to the sun, water bath roasting (a method where hot water is poured over the bean until it becomes soft), oven baking (where baked goods are placed inside an oven that warms up quickly), and even smoking (where tobacco is burned on top of the bean). All of these methods produced different results but eventually all types of roasted coffee became popular because they provided a finer flavor profile than ground coffees
