Hayward was founded in 1868 by John Sutter and Jedediah Smith as an agricultural village on the south banks of the San Ramon River. The name Hayward comes from two words, Haywood and Oakland, both of which were given to it by early settlers. In 1872, they established a ferry service across the river to connect their new community with Oakland. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1886. It became part of Berkeley County in 1893 when Berkeley became a countywide municipality. The city experienced rapid growth following World War II and today has a population over 1 million people. Hayward is located in north-central Alameda County on Interstate 580 between Dublin Bay and Contra Costa County on I-880/State Route 266 (the southern border of Newark). The City's borders are defined by Interstate 680 to the east, Highway 101 to the west (or south), Telegraph Road to the north and Maclay Way to the south (Northbound I-880 becomes Boulevard during rush hour). Downtown Hayward lies within City limits while East Hayward extends into Contra Costa County beyond those boundaries; West Hayward falls within Alameda County only until MacDonald Drive crosses into Contra Costa County for about 0.5 mile before terminating at Walnut Creek Blvd./Highway 17 near Livermore Airport
