The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Hayward, California. The city is home to one of the navy's largest fleets of ships, as well as two anchors for the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The USS Constitution (1812-1815) and USS sidewinder (1942-1945) are both considered "navy holy sites." Naval sailors have been present in Hayward since 1853 when Commodore David Jones founded the Naval Volunteer Reserve here. In 1865, Hayward was designated as the first naval port on the West Coast of America. It was during this time that Commodore John W. Richardson discovered oil shale in nearby San Lorenzo Valley and began developing Hayward into a major inland center for petroleum production. During World War II, Hayward played an integral role in the effort against Japan. The city experienced a significant influx of military personnel during World War II, which led to many new businesses and homes being built in town. Hayward also saw its first professional basketball team come into existence during this time; the American Basketball Association's Oakland Oaks played their inaugural season in 1946/47 at Recreation Park then known as Anaheim Arena before moving to what is now Kaiser Fieldhouse later that year. In 1951/52, Raiders owner Al Davis moved his football team from Oakland to Hayward and renamed them the Raiders after he took over ownership of their baseball team from Forbes magazine’s Buffalo Bisons following their bankruptcy crisis that season – one year after they had won Super Bowl XVI (the only AFL championship game ever). That same year, Hayward hosted its first NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal game when it played host to Xavier University (#2 seed), who were undefeated at home at that point but were upset by #1 seeded North Carolina State 49–46 [*] . In 1957/58, Disneyland opened its doors with Operation Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs followed five years later – both Parks were part of Walt Disney's plans for expanding Disneyland across Southern California following his purchase of ABC network.[1] When Disneyland closed down for several months due to an electrical fire back in 1964,[2] most likely caused by sparks created by those working on building One Hundred Mockingbird near Tomorrowland,[3][4] Naval sailors once again filled up key spots on Main Street USA within days – including General Mills' old flour mill located just south of downtown[5];[6][7] local fast food restaurants such as KFC[8][9], Pizza Hut[10], Donny & Marie's[11], along with dozens more small businesses throughout downtown during what would be called "Operation Street Fair" soon afterwards – all while demonstrations occurred outside featuring various naval unit insignia alongside floats made locally from materials donated by local businesses.[12][13] As one might expect given Captain James Dewey's tenure helm over Naval Aviation Command Headquarters elements right throughtil his retirement effective May 1st 1969 - there was continual focus placed upon aircraft modernization through Air Force adversary operations underway primarily off Okinawa & Saipan area however also airlift missions via C-130 Hercules transport planes operated out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Eniwetok Mariana Islands weather permitting flew sorties using TGM-41A AIM missiles armed with ESSR ordnance capable Harpoon Missiles while conducting aerial attacks Against Enemy Vessels operating off Okinawa coast - increased bombing raids against enemy targets inside Japan utilizing Hellfire Missile Range Predator Aircraft flown outfitted with Fire mMeter Sensor pod(FMS) system Measurements taken from Sensor Pod directly above target showed pinpoint accuracy @ about 10 meters vs 50 meters Observation Tower located atop Mt Shuri Minato Site Onboard Japanese Battleship Yamato ] [* After Captains Dewey's retirement & replacement By First Lieutenant Commander Tom Bearden USNR [14])* While still commanding Naval Aviation Command Headquarters element responsible for airlift missions thru C-130 Hercules transports MCAS Miramar - additional duties fell upon First Lieutenant Commander Tom Bearden who assumed commandof Naval Aviation detachment Operating aboard Japanese battleship Yamato ] [* This paper does not mention any other ship or unit named Yamato ]

The Hayward Naval Shipyard has been the home of USS Iowa (BB-63) and USS John F. Kennedy (CV-64) for more than 60 years. The yard built two guided missiles destroyers, the USS Pennsylvania (DDG-83) in 1984 and the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 73) in 2009. In 2013, the Navy announced that it will mothball all of its ships at the shipyard until 2023 due to budget cuts.
Hayward, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 362 as of the 2010 census. The city's name is derived from the Spanish word "hayueruela" meaning "forested place". Hayward was incorporated on February 26, 1892. The first post office in Hayward was established at Mission Gottlieb on May 1, 1892. The current downtown Hayward area began to be developed in the early 20th century and includes the Reuben J. Davies Recreation Center and Hayward Music Hall which opened in 1922 as a part of what is now called Downtown Hayward. In 1936, the City Council voted to rename the entire downtown area after Governor Goodwin Averill Goodwin who had been influential in founding Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area respectively. Parts of downtown Hayward were destroyed by fire in 1951 but have since been rebuilt with new architecture and features including an art museum, library system, restaurants, nightlife and even a amusement park (the first such park east of the Mississippi River). Downtown Hayward also has several high-rise buildings that are home to many businesses and notable residents such as former Mayor Dianne Feinstein and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison. Today’s downtown continues to grow with plans for redevelopment into an urban center powered by renewable energy sources as well as increasing recognition within Silicon Valley for its role in promoting green technology developments throughout Northern California
