Hayward, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 47,653 as of the 2010 census. Hayward became an incorporated city on November 5, 1876. It is located on the east shore of San Francisco Bay and within walking or biking distance of many major tourist attractions including Fisherman's Wharf and Golden Gate Park. The name Hayward comes from two places: Haywood Creek and Hayward Valley. The creek was created by the damming of the small river Umpqua by way of a long tunnel project completed in 1907-1908. The valley was named for John Sutter, who had discovered gold near the valley in 1847. Hayward was founded by Captain George Hayward and his wife Hannah Hastings (née Hutton). Captain Hayward arrived in 1787 from Portsmouth, England with his family after being shipwrecked off Cape Horn. He built a cabin at Point Arena on land he acquired from Juan Rodríguez de Coquimbo y Valdivia about what is now downtown Hayward. In 1836 Captain Hayward married Hannah Hastings and they moved to Monterey where he owned several vessels loading goods destined for China until his death in 1850 aged 58 years old%. His widow continued to live at Point Arena until her death in 1861 when she gave birth to their only child George Washington Hastings (1838-1921). Captain George Haysons son John Ayer Hayes took over operations at Point Arena during 1850-1855 when father died without male heirs apparent so mother took legal action against first cousin Edmund Rice which led to establishment of private ownership ultimately leading to incorporation date 5/11/1876 After taking over operations Captains Hayes & Haysons raised $6000 cash & 10% fine bonds payable out “to secure titlee thereof” upon incorporation they agreed that wharfage fees be collected @ $1 per ton not yet paid but due within 10 days signifying entry into full operationcoaching horses @$2 per day on accountof high demand found but no evidence exists that horse traffic increased since incorporation

George Hayward was born in 1800 in Ipswich, England to parents who were farmers. He came to America in 1827 when he was only 16 years old and settled in what is now Hayward County, California. He started a small farm and soon began trading goods with other settlers in southern Californias developing region. In 1847, he married Eliza Ann Fowler and they had five children: Wilford (born 1850), George (1852-1937), John Fenton (1855-1925), Charles Winton Fowler (1858-1948) and Helen Louise Fowler (1860-1948). The family moved to north central California where they continued farming until their death in 1918. They left behind many residues including the current name of Hayward which is derived from their home state of New Hampshire where George moved after his marriage.
