Hayward is a city in Alameda County, California. Its population was 54,592 at the 2010 census. The name Hayward comes from the Spanish word "hayuer" meaning "forest." The first Europeans to visit what is now Hayward were members of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and they named it San Lorenzo because of its location near San Lorenzo Creek. The town was founded on November 15, 1868 by James Hayward and his brother-in-law Nathaniel Lyon as a landing for travelers journeying down the Amalfi Coast. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location at the mouth of an estuary that provided water for ships going up the bay to Oakland and San Francisco. In 1876, American Sam Nunn visited Hayward and recommended that Congress create a military post in the area to protect against Comanche raids. After Congress failed to appropriate funds for such a post, Nunn donated land in what is now Hayward for this purpose. In 1880, John Dutton built an agricultural fairgrounds on current day Livermore Boulevard which became one of the largest fairs in North America. In 1886, United States Commodore George Morrison arrived in Hayward with his fleet of warships during his world tour and set up shop here until he turned around and sailed back home after experiencing difficulties along the coastlines of Northern California. In 1916, General John J Pershing moved Camp Pershing from Stockton to northern Alameda County on land that he had acquired following World War I armistice negotiations between America and Central Europe. The camp attracted many servicemen who were released from prison or military service in Japan or Germany after those countries lost their war possessions including large areas of China proper (now Taiwan). Many Japanese Americans lived in Hayward until 1946 when they were relocated to other Bay Area cities under U.S.-China mutual agreement known as Operation Crossroads. Hayward's economy changed dramatically after World War II when hundreds of thousands of new residents poured into Alameda County looking for jobs in newly developed suburbs like Pleasanton and Dublin/Oakland. With high school education becoming increasingly difficult to obtain across all sections of society, many people began working their way through local colleges by taking night classes or doing odd jobs during lunch hours while still trying to pay off college loans . Manufacturing companies closed down throughout most of California during World War II due largely to lack of demand within wartime ally Japan; however, some businesses managed to survive thanks to alliances formed with other nations such as Russia (Dynacraft) or Brazil (Fenestra). These relationships led eventuallyto numerous job opportunities for American veterans returning home following hostilities ended However , many manufacturing plants reopened only after 1945 because there was no available marketplace for postwar manufactured products outside North America . The end result was increased unemployment among white collar workers combined with accelerated gentrificationof downtown Hayward which caused significant displacementof low income residents
