Healdsburg is a town in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 7,607 at the 2010 census. It is located on the side of the Santa Rosa Mountains and has an elevation of 1,500 feet (400 m). The name Healdsburg comes from Hughealda meaning "haunted area." In 1821 John Heald set up a post office in what is now downtown Healdsburg. A year later he started to sell goods to travelers passing through Sonoma Valley. By 1825, Heald had opened a store on Main Street near today's Pioneer Square. In 1827 George Hearst moved his family to Healdsburg from San Francisco and bought some land here. The townspeople built their first school in 1829 and soon began to trade with other towns in Sonoma County. In 1830 they founded the Agricultural Society which grew into the present-day Sonoma Community College. They also bought land for a jail and for public square whereon they built their first courthouse in 1833-34. The First Baptist Church was organized in 1865 by John Neely Bryan and finished building that year; it became one ofSonoma's earliest brick churches. A cotton gin was built by William Haines about 1840 along with other small businesses until it closed about 1850 due to competition from better machines elsewhere. In 1870s something new happened in the town: women started getting involved politically! One female voter even helped organize streetcars for residents during this time period! By 1920 there were more than 50 businesses including nine banks as well as six general stores, four milliners' shops, two dance halls/fairsgrounds (one open until 6 am), three movie theaters (Cinemark Plaza being opened early 1955), three restaurants (Marriott’s having its opening several months before Disneyland), one hardware store, two tobacconists’ stores plus twenty-four carriage houses used for storage or housing stock during Prohibition era; seventy total residences plus thirty business buildings! All this activity led to increased growth over time culminating with 2ooo residential units when it counted as “Healdsburg Village” according to city ordinance adopted in 1951 Today we can still see many of these pioneer businesses left behind such as Marriotts Theatre Annex & Marriott Hotel
