Hemet is a small town in Kern County, California and the seat of Hemet Valley. The population was 1,141 at the 2010 census. The valley is located east of downtown Hemet and west of Cottonwood Heights and Sunland Park. The first Europeans to visit Hemet were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1848, the United States acquired Rancho San Luis Rey from Mexico for $5,000. A post office was established at San Luis Rey in 1852, and by 1860 there were 10 inhabitants. In 1865, Don Francisco Javier de la Serna y Menendez granted land to John Neely Richardson for $2 per acre ($10 per mile). Richardson built the first permanent settler's cabin in what is now Hemet on October 14, 1865. By 1870 there were 30 people living in what is now Hemet Valley. Hemet started as a cattle ranch run by ranchers named Hinkle, Ives and Kinghorn which later became part of larger Western Coalfield operation called Consolidated Mines & Railroad Company (WCRR). After World War II WCRR merged with Eastern Railroad to form Los Angeles Central Railroad (LACR). On February 22nd 1961 LACR activated its right-of-way through most of Kern County from Lancaster to Bakersfield that had been abandoned by Eastern Railroad two years earlier when they merged into LACR On May 5th 1961 LACR opened up access to the old Consolidated Mines & Railroad Company trackage south of town from what is now residential development called Sawmill Road north along Cypress Avenue past Coyote Hills until it reached an intersection with State Route 9 near Union Station whereupon it continued northeast along SR 9 past El Centro until reaching US 395 about half way between Bakersfield and Fresno Junction whereupon it terminated at State Route 92 just outside Fresno
