The Navy has a long and proud history in Hemet, California. The first navy ship to visit the city was the USS Constitution on November 17, 1847. The Navy's first permanent base in Hemet was at Naval Beach on October 15, 1856. The USS Arizona torpedoed and sank the HMS Guerriere in 1911 during World War I, which led to the construction of Naval Beach as its primary naval facility. In 1954, the Hemet-Coronado Municipal Airport opened for commercial use. In 1959, the United States Coast Guard replaced the Navy as Hemet's primary landowner with City of Hemet Authority under Control of City Council. In 1969, Commandant Don Armstrong assumed command of both forces when Lieutenant Commander Rufus E. King became Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (Ashore). Since then there have been many significant changes to Navy activity in Hemet: A new 21st century waterfront development called North Harbor; renovation of old buildings within Admiralty Wharf; installation of state-of-the-art equipment inside and outside Fleet Marine Center; expansion/modernization of San Diego’s Port Hueneme Annex; establishment of Maritime Academy & School ashore (now known as Point Loma High School);and now our newest investment – North Landing Marina adjacent to Fleet Marine Center - all making this once small town into one big naval community!

The history of Hemet began with its founding by José María Atanasio Fernández de la Vega and his family. They arrived in 1853 from San Francisco and founded a small Spanish-American settlement at what is now known as Paso Robles (then called Avila). After gold was discovered near their settlement, they quickly built up Hemet into a flourishing town that enjoyed significant trade with nearby Fresno and Nevada City. In 1870, when the Central Valley Railroad reached Hemet through nearby Nevada City, it soon became one of its most important stops for passengers travelling between San Francisco and Sacramento. Despite being very close to major centres of trade and population, Hemet never quite caught up to those cities during its early years; this may have been due to its small size or lack of infrastructure at the time. Nevertheless, by 1928 Hemet had become an incorporated city with over 2,000 residents - making it one of the fastest growing cities in California during that decade! Due to its rapid growth and importance throughout Californian history - including both before and after World War II - Hemet has come to be well known statewide for both its unique culture (particularly among Latino communities) as well as some impressive achievements such as being home to one of California's largest Hispanic descent populations (estimated at around 40%!). And even today, many people from all over Northern California still visit or live in Hemeth while commuting back south each day!
