Small batch coffee history in Hemet, California began with a small cafe called the Hermitage. The cafe was started by Mr. and Mrs. John Heurtel in 1954, and served coffee from their home until 1957. The Heurtels were the first to open a small business in Hemet and it is said that they were the first to use whole bean beans in their coffee. In 1958, the Heurtels opened a second café called Cafe Don Giannini which became popular for its Italian-inspired food and delicious coffee. In 1961, they added brewing capabilities to their house café so that they could serve more than just coffee. In 1982, Mr. Heurtel passed away but his wife kept Café Don Giannini operational until her death in 1998. It was then passed along to her son Evan Heurtel who continued operations of the business until 2003 when he sold it to Angelo Bertucci who operated it as a restaurant until 2009 when it closed again due to low customer demand. After Angelo Bertucci’s closure, larger companies took over his businesses including Starbucks (2009-present) which bought Cafe Don Giannini from him for $4 million dollars; Tazo Mexican Coffee (2010-present); and finally Hemet Coffee Company (2015-present). All of these companies have used different beans and methods over time which has led to the unique flavor profile that each company provides their customers.
