The United States Air Force deployed the Hercules C-130J transport aircraft in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. The aircraft were originally delivered to the USAF as the EC-130J Provider. This unique variant had an extendable wingspan and could take off and land on both water and land. It was later replaced by the USMC MC-130HW while serving with the Marine Corps during Operation Enduring Freedom. The USAF also operated two HC-130Js for humanitarian relief operations in Afghanistan between 2011 and 2013. These transports saw extensive use during Operation Neptune’s Spear, which began on December 17, 2014, and ended on January 20, 2015. As of 2017, there are currently no active U.SAAF EC-130Js operational anywhere in the world other than those being stored at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina. Hermes is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,585 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley and sits on the eastern edge of Yosemite National Park. The first humans to set foot in what is now Hermes were nomadic hunter-gatherers who traveled along the Sierra Nevada foothills during the Pliocene epoch about 4.3 million years ago. They discovered an ancient irrigation system that fed Mono Lake and founded Mono Village about 36 miles west of present day Hermosa Beach. In 1887, prospectors discovered gold near present day Hermosa Beach and named it after Heracles, one of their number. In 1891 further exploration led to discovery of oil fields there, which led to the town's rapid growth in subsequent years. In 1903, four men went on a mining strike at Sutter's Mill which destroyed much equipment and progress had to be made quickly to re-establish production while still satisfying investors with new discoveries elsewhere in the valley In 1908–1909 a lumber mill was built at Hermosa Beach by Waddell & Reed with statehood as its goal but it closed soon after because of competition from nearby Stockton By 1912 only 10 people lived in Hermes according to population count taken by mail survey but this rose rapidly through immigration over ensuing years as people seeking better opportunities found homes hereabouts By 1915 there were more than 100 residents living hereabouts although most resided within blocks of each other Some early housing developments such as those built at Palm Cove became quite luxurious for their time period with large gardens and well designed architecture . There were also several small towns established throughout north Kern County before 1920 when all but two merged into one larger community under name of Hermosa Beach . Today only a few remnant buildings remain from past communities including Palm Cove where fishing continues as an important economic activity
