The California National Guard was founded on November 26, 1846. The first unit, the 1st Battalion of the Sacramento Regiment, was organized at Hercules in December 1846. The battalion served in a number of engagements in Polk County, including the Mexican-American War and the Bear Flag Rebellion. In 1850, the battalion was redesignated as part of the 9th Infantry Regiment and deployed to New Mexico in 1851-1852. After arriving at Santa Fe, New Mexico, it participated in various campaigns against Apache and Comanche Indians.
