The first espresso machine was invented by Angelo Rossi in 1892. In 1914, Italian immigrants Giovanni and Salvatore Bonomo started a small coffee business called the "Bonomos". The business grew to be known as Angelo Rossi Coffee Factory. In 1927, Italian immigrant Luigi Illini opened the first Italian-owned grocery store in Hercules. Illini's store became one of the most popular grocery stores in town. Over time, other Italians founded their own businesses in Hercules such as Massimo Bottura's Tassone Coffee Company and Mario Batali's Pizzeria Bianca.
Hercules was once a small town in California. It is now known as Hercules, California because of the famous Hercules statue that stands outside of the town square. The statue is made out of granite and it has a height of over 20 feet. The statue is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hercules, California. The small town had many businesses and residents until the early 1900s when a large earthquake hit the area. This caused extensive damage to buildings and killed many people. After the quake, people started moving away from Hercules and it slowly lost its population. In recent years, however, there have been some attempts to bring back some of the old businesses in Hercules. In 1955, George Custer was killed near present day Hercules while on his horse The Little Bighorn. This event has been widely regarded as an inspiration for American military leadership and patriotism throughout history. As a result, numerous statues honoring General Custer have been erected throughout America since then. One such example is located in downtown Hercules which honors him with a large granite monument that reads “General Custer: Hero of America”

Hercules was founded in 1872 by E.W. Dominguez and Wm.L. Warner as a small agricultural town located on the San Joaquin River, about 12 miles northeast of Stockton. The first post office was established in 1873; Hercules had a population of only 30 people when it incorporated as a city in 1875. The City of Hercules grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1907 had a population of over 1,000 people. The growth of Hercules led to the erection of many buildings including the City Hall (1876), the old Masonic Lodge (1877), and the First National Bank (1880). In 1886, Hercules became an incorporated city with a population of over 1,500 people. The city's first mayor was Atherton Cranch and its first council members were Solomon Jaffe, Mabel Ladd, John Koster, and Charles Fenton-Hayes. During this time there were also several important civic events such as the dedication of the new United States Courthouse (1900) and the founding of California State Normal School (1902). In 1912, Mayor Hiram Peebles merged two smaller towns - Modesto and Webster - into Hercules so that they would have more residents for city services. This action caused somelocal concern that their constituents would be ignored if their own communities continued to grow at an uncontrolled rate without them being given equal representation on CITY OFFICIALS! However, this problem never materialized because after merging these communities all property values increased considerably making both towns very valuable tax bases for Herculaneum citizens! In 1924 Mayor Clarence King opened up Homer Street which ran from downtown to north side streets serving all partsof town until it reached Interstate 5 near Stockton Boulevard where it terminated at exits 221A & 221B
Hercules was a rancho located in what is now Hercules, California. The original name of the rancho may have been Rancho de la Bandera, but it was changed to Rancho Hercules in 1876. The land that is now Hercules was part of the Mexican land grant Rancho Las Colinas. In 1848, Mexican General Santa Anna sold the land to John C. Frémont for $5,000. The first post office at Rancho Hercules opened on November 10, 1856. In 1865, the Ulysses S. Grant military command moved into what is today downtown Hercules and established artillery batteries here as part of their preparations for an Invasion of Mexico that never happened because General Saúlavedra Trujillo relieved Grant on October 20th and occupied Mexico City instead. Rancho de la Bandera continued until 1880 when it reverted back to Mexican ownership and was renamed Rancho San Ramón y Galdós. The last resident from this period died in 1916 near present-day La Canada Flintridge east of town on North Pacific Highway 159
