Hercules is also the namesake of the "Hercules" oil field, which was drilled by ChevronTexaco in 1984 and became one of the largest gas discoveries in United States history. The first inhabitants of what would become Hercules were Native American people who built villages along the river that flows through their land. The area now known as Hercules was first visited by Europeans in 1769 when it was part of Rancho El Rey de la Hacienda,owned by Junípero Serra. In 1821, George Cuming named it after his friend and business partner Hercules Chavez, who had died near San Francisco during a gold rush. In 1905, residents organized to form a school district and voted to name the new school "Hercules". In 1959, they changed it to "Hermes", after another member of their community - Herb Wesson - who died suddenly at age 54 while working for Sonoma County government. In1978, local businessman Rick Kapp donated money for construction of a shopping mall which anchored Interstate 5 south of town. The structure still stands today and is used as a public library branch. Two years later, another local entrepreneur donation led to the development of what would become Northridge High School; this building still stands today and is used as a middle school for students in grades 7-12. In 1992, Hercules incorporated as an unincorporated village with its own governance body called the Village Councilmember Organization (VCO). In 2003, voters approved Measure R – also known as “Thetownhood” – which granted full voting rights to all citizens over 15 years old living within 2 miles (3 kilometers) radius of any municipal office or governing body including but not limited to Village Councilmember Organizations (VCOs). This change created more opportunities for young people living near municipalities to participate politically due to their proximity rather than just having voting rights within 2 miles (3 kilometers).
