Air Force Deployed Gift History in Hermosa Beach, California The Hermosa Beach Air National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War II. Today, the Guard is one of the nation's largest and most diverse air forces. The Guard-led aerial search and rescue unit is responsible for providing basic life support to citizens in need. In 1951, the Air Force deployed a gift from America to the people of Hermosa Beach. A C-47 Globemaster III aircraft was donated by United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE) as part ofOperation Gratitude. This gift represented an unprecedented level of military support for a community in Southern California. The Globemaster III flew intoHermosa Beach Municipal Airport and unloaded its cargo of food, clothes, medical supplies, toys and more. It was this first military deployment by USAFE in over fifty years that helped shape the community into what it is today. In honor of this significant event, AFB Hermosa Beach has named one of its two runways after United States Air Forces Europe – Museum Runway 4L “The Flying Fortress” and Museum runway 5H “Hermes Boulevard” both now operate under the name “USAFE 4L/5H Memorial Gardens”

In Hermosa Beach, California on Christmas Eve in 1954, the United States Air Force Deployed a Gift to Santa. It was an open-air hangar used by the Air Force at nearby Vandenberg AFB where they stored their planes. Inside the hangar was a big screen television and games for kids. Some of the children from nearby homes came down to play and there were also TVs set up in other parts of the hangar for people who wanted to watch it from home. The gift was a brand new Boeing 707 airliner which had just been delivered to the USAF. The plane was christened with an open-air flying ceremony by Lt Col John Tatum, Commander of First Tactical Fighter Wing at Vandenberg AFB on December 24th 1954. The plane carried gifts for all members of Congress and Department of Defense officials attending the event as well asGeneral Maxwell Taylor himself who received a gift package filled with airplane tools, manuals and other goodies. Since its deployment this has become one of busiest airports in Southern California due to all the people coming down to play!
Hermosa Beach is a beach town located on the Pacific Coast of California, about 33 miles south of Santa Monica. The population was 27,227 at the 2010 census. The town boundaries are Akhil-Ala Street to the north, Hermosa Avenue to the east, and Palos Verdes Boulevard to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hermosa Beach were Spanish missionaries in 1769. In 1887, entrepreneur George Hearst built a resort here known as Hearst's Harbour. He named it after his Mexican bride, who had given him an orange for his birthday. The resort closed in 1912 but reopened in 1922 as a hotel and casino with regular summer concerts by Leo Tolstoy and other celebrities. In 1951, actress Marilyn Monroe moved from nearby Malibu and set up residency at the now defunct Trump International Hotel & Casino here while she shot parts for her movie "Some Like It Hot." The MGM Grand Hotel opened in 1953 as part of a larger complex that included two other hotels: the Riviera and the Flamingo which became known collectively as "The MGM Mirage". Her last movie before her death in 2018 was "Forrest Gump". In 1958–1959, Herb Alpert recorded one of his earliest hit singles here with Maurice Gibb on vocals and piano; it would be their only studio recording together until 1968's rockin' cover of "Suzie Cat". All three branches of Ladd’s Hardware store (now Sears) operated consecutively from 1957-1983; these stores are adjacent to each other on State Street between First Street and Second Street southern border of downtown Hermosa Beach. In 1978–1979 Ladd’s merged with Kwik Mart #1 on State Street just south side of Main street into one large store called “Kwik Mart #2” which is still open today (2018) across Mainstreet from Sears

In 1995, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, USAF deployments grew significantly as a result of Operation Joint Endeavour – an effort by NATO to keep peace in Central Europe while Russia prepared to take over. The strategy was successful and by 1999, USAF forces had been deployed in every country in Central and Eastern Europe. The history of Hermosa Beach dates back to 1887 when Moses Chamberlain purchased 2,000 acres (900 hectares) of land on which he built a small beachfront resort overlooking Long Beach. In 1907, Harry Kapp developed an artificial beach on some of Chamberlain's property after being attracted by the natural beauty of Hermosa Bayou and its rich phosphate deposits. Harmonica Pier was built in 1912 as part of Harry Kapp's gift to his wife Alma standards during their honeymoon in America. It was renamed "Alma Standards Pier" in her honor in 1926 after she died from tuberculosis while living there with him. In 1935, Normandie Slatkin opened her own hotel at what is now known as Neptune's Place Shopping Center across from Lighthouse Point State Park; however it failed within a few years due to financial troubles. Alumni Association President Irving Berlin stayed at Normandie's Hotel during his visit to Los Angeles in 1938; it would be his only stayin' overnight outside New York City that year. renaming it "The Star-Ledger Hotel" shortly thereafter effective May 9th 1938 following purchase by then Hearst Corporation affiliate paper company American Radio Company (ARCO). ARCO moved into their new building on Harbor Drive near Redondo Beach on December 1st 1941; operations were transferred from Earhart Avenue Studio Building - now known as Empire Records - immediately prior thereto becoming operational under new management including Jack Harris who had been Vice President/General Manager American Broadcasting Company Hollywood branch since February 1922 when ARCO became controlled by Hearst Corporation following merger of four radio networks - ABC, CBS, NBC and DuMont - under CBS ownership which made Hearst Corporation controlling interest in all major radio networks combined save NBC which remained independently owned until its sale to Time Warner Incorporated on August 6th 1992 resulting in Hearst Corporation being merged into Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp plc., making Hermosa Beach one of fourteen cities within Rupert Murdoch’s newly created Fox Broadcasting Company media empire along with Waco ( Texas), Cleveland ( Ohio), Jacksonville ( Florida), Phoenix ( Arizona), Minneapolis-St Paul ( Minnesota) and Tampa Bay (Florida). On October 15th 1996 Tribune Media announced they were selling all but Fox BroadcastingCompany’s television stations except KTLA FOX 5 Los Angeles & KFI LA 7 TampaBay station plus their web site www2kulturecom for $3 billion making HermosaBeach one of twenty five stations sold including those located inside or adjacent to Fox BroadcastingCompany facilities with full control over their programming schedules and assets subjectonly to futureancelations without notice no matter how long they may last .[1] While much has changed since those days such as local businesses taking over the former TV station buildings or anchors moving out altogether like KBFX(LAS) Channel 4 Austin replaced longtime morning co-anchor Dan Rather with national anchorwoman Megyn Kelly beginning January 8th 2013 thru September 30th 2017[2], muchofthe original infrastructure remains intact such as Harmonica Pier where live music performances are still held every alternate Wednesday night featuring nationally touring acts followed by cocktails and lunchtime sandwiches at Angelenos favorite spot Stonington Street Cafe
