Air Force gift history in Hermosa Beach, California began in the early days of the Air Force when a group of officers and enlisted personnel at Hanscom Field, Massachusetts organized an air show to promote aviation. The first airshow was on November 12th, 1923 with six planes. On July 1st, 1924 the U.S.Army's 4th Cavalry Regiment traveled to Hermosa Beach for an air show that attracted more than 100 planes from all over California and Nevada. In 1941 the Air Force stationed its first squadron at Vandenberg AFB in Southern California. It was during World War II that gifts started coming into the Air Force from civilian donors including automobiles, radios, tools, vessels and appliances. In 1946 a new hangar was built at Vandenberg AFB which became known as "The Hangar of Hell". Gifts continued to come in through various channels such as patriotism donations or those made in memory of military service members who had passed away. During peacetime there were no major gifts given by civilians but during wartime there were many opportunities for donated items to be used by the Air Force or given as premiums or freebies to servicemen/women who served their country with distinction. One example is the donation of fuel tanks for use by fighter jets which are still being used today by our military aircraft! This move increased USAFA’s command authority over all USAAF commands and responsibilities. And it would be these new authorities that would come into play during Operation Desert Storm—the largest aerial offensive against Iraq ever mounted by any country. From its origins as an aviation unit underarmed with just a few planes, USAFA has grown into one of America’s most powerful militaries. Today, it oversees more than 1,200 aircraft operating across 30 countries around the world. The U.S. Air Force gifted the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce with a hangar and hangar bay in 1945. The chamber leased the space from the United States Navy for $1,000 per month. In 1951, the Air Force donated two F-4 Phantom jets to the chamber as part of a gift package that also included four Beechcraft Baron airliners and an engine room.
