The Hermosa Beach Army Reserve detachment has deployed in support of the United States military since World War II. The detachment's history goes back to 1941 when the U.S. government formed an army reserve detachment in Hermosa Beach, California to offer civilian soldiers a place to live and train. The first deployment occurred in 1945 when the detachment was mobilized for Operation Crossroads and was stationed at Fort MacArthur in San Francisco. In 1951, the detachment moved to Camp Pendleton and became part of the California National Guard. From 1974-1978, the detachment served as part of Marine Corps Base Vandenberg and from 1982-1986 it served as part of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. On 1 December 1987, the Hermosa Beach Army Reserve detachment became an authorized unit of the American Forces Korea Command effective with its move from South Korea to Japan. Since then, it has deployments throughout East Asia including deployments to Okinawa during Operation Tomodachi in 2009 and 2010, Guam during Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and 2014, and Da Nang Province, Vietnam during Typhoon Narses in September 2015. The current deployment is currently taking place in South Korea as part of joint exercises between United States Military Command (USMC) Pacific Area Commands (PACOM) - 10th Fleet which includes forces from Australia - 8th Fleet; Japan Maritime Administration's 31st Naval District; Korean People's Army 2nd Division - 6th Brigade Combat Team; Republic Of Korea Navy 4th Naval Brigade - 11th Naval Regiment; Australian Defence Force 3rd Infantry Battalion - 5th Regiment (Aus); Royal Dutch Marines Commando Squadron 1st Battalion (RNLM)) - 25 Commando Squadron; Norwegian Security Police Armoured Unit Akerøy/Nordre Fjordsland/Norwegian Coastal Divisionen /Norwegian Coast Guards Distrikt Lofoten./South Vietnamese National Detection Team 2nd Lieutenant Nguyen Van Vinh

The Hermosa Beach Marine Corp. was an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps that served in World War II. The regiment was activated on 7 December 1941 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and sailed for Casablanca, Morocco on 25 January 1942. The regiment disembarked at Oran, Algeria on 10 February 1942 and fought its way across the Spanish-American War boundary into Puerto Rico to join the US Seventh Marines. On 15 May 1942 it joined Task Force 58 under Rear Admiral Ishmael Farragut in Battle of Midway which resulted in the Japanese loss of five cruisers and two destroyers as well as extensive damage to USS Enterprise (CV-6). AfterMidway Farragut detached Task Forces 58 from Task Force 58 Commander Rear Admiral Husband Kimmel to conduct Operation Buckner which resulted in the Imperial Japanese Navy being forced to surrender without a fight. On 30 June 1946 the Hermosa Beach Marine Corp disbanded with its soldiers being discharged at Naval Station Whiting Field, Florida.

Hermosa Beach is a seaside town in the coastal city of San Diego, California. It is known for its wide sand dunes and clear blue waters. The area was originally part of Rancho Santa Fe, which was granted to Juan Padre on September 6, 1769. The name "Hermosa" comes from the Spanish word "hermosillo," meaning "the beautiful one." The first land grant for Hermosa Beach was in 1887 to Capt. John J. Worth and his wife, Emma Ayerworth Worth. Captain Worth had been captain of the USS Constitution during the Mexican-American War and he had become interested in inland farming after that experience. He married Emma in 1882 while she still lived at Fort Mason in San Francisco Bay Area. They moved to Hermosa Beach and began a small farm with twelve acres (5 ha). In 1905, the town site was bought by banker George Ewing who built three hotels – La Costa Hotel (1905), Pacific Coast Hotel (1907) and Surfside Inn (1910). In 1912, Los Angeles County offered $2 million for 100 acres (40 ha) of County line land between Pasadena and San Pedro so that it could be used as an open-air parkland adjoining downtown Los Angeles. Ewing accepted but instead developed what became known as Westwood Village into high-end housing developments including Regency Village (now called Echo Park), Rialto Place, Vinegar Hill and Bel Air Hills. After World War II ended, many servicemen returned home from Europe or Japan without their families behind them; this created an opportunity for entrepreneurs such as Admiral Isadore Strauss to develop businesses along Hermosa Boulevard near Redondo Beach Naval Station where soldiers were housed before being sent back out into naval service again
Hermosa Beach was founded in 1876 by Captain John C. Fremont and his family. It was named after the white sand beach on which it was located. The town grew rapidly in the early years, due to its close proximity to Los Angeles and its easy access to water supplies. By 1902, Hermosa Beach had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1915, the City of Hermosa Beach became a municipally-controlled city withself-government. On July 1, 1942, during World War II, USS "USS Arizona" sunk off the coast of Hermosa Beach after being damaged by Japanese torpedoes while convoying allied ships in the Pacific Ocean
