Hermosa Beach is a town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 22,851 at the 2010 census. Hermosa Beach is located on the Pacific Coast and bordered by Anaheim to the north, Laguna Beach to the east, Newport Beach to the south, and Seal Beach to the west. The first people to live in what is now Hermosa Beach were Native American Ohlone settlers who lived along Mission Bayou and Point Loma before sailing out into Puget Sound in 1792 for food. A small area of present-day Hermosa beach was developed as an agricultural community around 1885 by Captain John Waddell of San Francisco with support from General James K. Polk during his visit to California. The name "Hermes" was given by Captain Waddell's wife when they landed at Shoreline Harbor on November 15th of that year. The post office at Hermosa Beaches was established in 1886, and would remain open until it closed in 1954 due to increased postage rates. In 1907 developer George Fenton built a beach resort on then undeveloped land between State Route 1 (now US 101) and County Road 2 (now SR 1). Fenton named his development "Hermes". By 1915 most of what is now Hermosa had been annexed by Anaheim; however, annexation did not occur until 1961 when Hermosa became part of Orange County under Measure R. After World War II large numbers of Japanese Americans were interned during World War II living in Southern California; many moved into or near HermosaBeach as early as 1946 whenenew waves of Japanese immigrants arrived following Japan's withdrawal from World War II . Many Japanese-owned businesses still operate today including two convenience stores which have been open since 1955 and a sushi restaurant which has been operational since 1967
