Hermosa Beach, California is a town in Orange County, California, United States. It is located on the Pacific Coast and has a population of about 66,000 people as of 2010. The name Hermosa means "golden" in Spanish. The first coffee beans were roasted by José Joaquín Estrada and his family near the present day intersection of State Route 116 and Fourth Street in 1887. Coffee was originally ground for beverage use only. By 1912 the Estradas had opened a small café called The Grand Central Café which became one of the most popular spots for coffee around town. In 1916, Augustus Steller bought part of the business from José Joaquín Estrada's widow Lola Estrada and ran it as The Augustus Steller Coffee Company until his death in 1954. In 1957, Harry Jaffe purchased part of the company from Augustus Steller's estate and continued to run it as Harry Jaffe Coffee Company until his death in 1978. In 1985, Don Freeman acquired majority ownership interest in Harry Jaffe Coffee Company from Harry Jaffe's executors and began serving coffee under license from various roasters throughout Southern California including Peet’s Coffee & Tea Corporation (now Starbucks), Flying Fish Brewing Co., Douro Valley Roasters (now Decanter) and others up until 1993 when he sold all interests to two brothers - Jeffrey Bechtel and Bruce Bechtel - who together founded Blue Bottle Coffee Incorporated on October 3rd, 1994 with headquarters at 810 North First Street in Hermosa Beach[1]. Blue Bottle was one of America’s earliest cafe-owning businesses,[2] eventually becoming globally known for its fresh roasted coffee products made right here at our shoplifting-friendly facility just steps away from our beachfront patio seating! A few weeks ago we celebrated our 10th anniversary! We've grown into what we are today because of all the passionate people that have worked here over the years - thank you!
