It is a small town with narrow streets and high cheekbones on its wide beachfront boulevard. Hermosa Beach has been called "the most beautiful place on Earth" by many people and tourists alike. The first European visitors to the area were Spanish missionaries in 1821. The first Englishman to visit the area was William Bickerton in 1828, who named it after his friend and employee, José Hermosa y Sánchez. The first post office opened in 1830. The town's name comes from a local hilltop which served as both a lookout and watering hole for sailors passing through the straits between Santa Barbara and Ventura County during the early 1800s. The community began to grow rapidly when the Panama-Pacific Railroad was built through Orange County in 1886, bringing passengers and goods from San Francisco to Los Angeles twice weekly. In 1907, Hermosa Beach became an incorporated city under then-County jurisdiction; however, it reverted back to its rural status shortly thereafter due to lack of funds for city infrastructure projects. In 1951, following passage of Coast Guard Bill 9052 (codenamed Operation Coronado), Hermosa Beach initiated preparations for military exercises that would take place off its shores throughout summer months; these maneuvers came to be known as "Operation Neptune's Spear." During much of the 1970s and 1980s there was significant opposition against Measure O – also known as "Doomsday Measure" – which soughtTo establish controls over how much sand would be dredged up from beaches along portions of OC's Channel Islands coastline relative to residential development rates withinHermosaBeach limits; this measure resulted in large numbers of residents flooding into downtown during low tide so that they could participate in what they saw as attempts by developers to control their communities' access thereto ( subsequently dubbed ' street cleaning ').

Hermosa Beach is a small town in Orange County, California, located on the Pacific Coast. The town was originally built in 1887 as part of the Southern Pacific Railroad's Long Beach Station. Hermosa Beach became an incorporated city in 1959 and has since grown to become one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations. The name "Hermes" comes from the place where the town was first founded, Hermes Rancho de las Hermositas (later known as Hermosa Beach). The first people to live in what is now Hermosa Beach were Native Americans who hunted and fished along the present-day shoreline. In 1867, Spanish missionaries came ashore to preach Christianity and founded a mission at Rancho Santa Margarita. From then until 1861, when American troops invaded Mexico during the Mexican-American War, this area lay within Mexican control. However, on September 22nd of that year Californian forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna seized control of Mexico City and all but two miles of coastal California; henceforth Los Angeles was effectively reoccupied by Americans. In 1887 railroad commissioners decided to build a station on Long Beach Peninsula because it would give passengers easy access from inland cities like Signal Hill and Huntington Heights. They named their new station "Hermes" after Pythagoras' theorem – if two squares are side by side with their hypotenuse touching water or land (i.e., they are both square), then their sum is greater than their individual parts because their squares have been combined into a whole.. The original building only had four rooms with no indoor plumbing or heating until 1912 when an addition was made which included three bathrooms with showers over each other for use by passengers arriving at different times during the day. For many years there was also a storeroom used by railway crews discharging tools before heading out onto the tracks for work.. A post office opened in 1898 which continued serving until 1922 when it became an express mail service operated by First National Bank.. A hotel called Pueblo Viejo replaced the original mission complex on Main Street between 4th Street and 7th Street in 1912 which functioned as both a hotel and post office until 1949 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by lightning while open late at night.. In 1925 local real estate developer Edward Joffe bought 272 acres including present day Hermosa Boulevard from Juan Gomez Orozco for $3 million dollars making him one of America's richest men at that time.. He quickly began developing this acreage into what is now downtown Hermosa beach using his own money rather than borrowing against future revenues generated from development projects across town .. By 1931 he had acquired 1,800 acres east of downtown where he laid down extensive Front Street business district including several movie theaters,, banks (), restaurants (), etc… Today much off-the-beaten path shopping can be found along Front Street near Third Avenue including some interesting vintage stores such as Foothill Glass Company dating back to 1896
