Hermosa Beach is one of the most affluent towns in California and has a reputation for being "the summer home of the rich". The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and fished in the area that now includes Hermosa Beach. In 1871, Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo discovered and mapped this coast on his trip from Mexico City to Monterey Bay. He called it Isla de las Mujeres (Island of Women). Upon his return to Spain, he reported finding two small islands near Santa Catalina Island—one called Rancho Santa Margarita (now known as La Jolla), and the other Wasatch Head—and thought they might be connected. A year later he named these islands Islas del Carmen (Islands of Carmen). In 1870, Capt. George Fenton chartered a ship called "Norfolk" with 24 passengers and sailed from San Francisco to Ventura County but didn't land at any beach in southern California until he reached Point Conception about 20 miles south of what is now Hermosa Beach. On July 26, 1870 – four days after reaching Point Conception -Fenton anchored his ship off shore onshore at what would become today's Mathews Avenue opposite present-day Donner Ave., just east of downtown Hermosa Beach municipal limits which surrounded much of what is now town property including Donner Avenue north to Pacific Coast Highway west then east to Mulberry Street along today's Redondo Boulevard within city limits Captain Fenton named this point Conception because although he could find no harbor or anchorage thereabouts within easy proximity thereof let him believe that some great commercial vessels coming into Californian waters had stopped there already once during their route from Vera Cruz down through San Diego Harbour by way of Long Wharf before making their final landfall at Point Conception Captain Fenton also believed that sincere thanks were due him by those noble gentlemen overborne by an overwhelming superior force when under siege on shore while taking possession thereof during our recent Mexican War who had so gallantly advanced upon us unresistingly bearing arms against combined forces bravely led by Commodore Perry – presuming that such considerations would influence future navigators who might hereafter visit this coast .... After anchoring ashore we went aft where we found several stores belonging to Mr John Wessels Esq proprietor wharveside warehouse having been premises afore mentioned . From these stores we proceeded ashore loaded with all sorts of merchandize needing no more than tide-power put aboard our vessel for conveyance inland .... We disembarked near Mrs Wessels house leaving behind us all mannerof merchandiseMessrs John Wessels & Sons storekeepers having meantime gone aboard our vessel under cover of night previous thereto ...... Our stay ashore lasted about three hours ........... [After] disembarking againe onboard our vessel we proceeded up wharf creek [to] take leave forever[.]
