Hermosa Beach is located on the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by Newport Beach to the east, Dana Point to the north, and Laguna Niguel to the west. It includes portions of both San Nicolas Island and Santa Ana Islands in addition to part of Venice Township. The first human settlement in what is now Hermosa Beach dates back to 1821 when Captain James Cook mapped out and named it "Nootka Sound". In 1848, Commodore John Bickham sold land that included present-day Hermosa Beaches for $8 per acre ($ today). The first real development happened during World War II when many servicemen built homes near Navy Base Naval Station Miramar as they awaited discharge. The current name of Hermosa Beach was bestowed upon it by then Mayor Harry Wright in 1948 after watching a group of white children playing on Santa Monica beach. At that time there were only two black residents - Mrs. Jessie Price who lived inland at Chaparral Rancho Seco and her son Julius Price who played with the white kids onshore at Weymouth Landing In 1951 City Manager Harry Waddell created an all-white city board which recommended renaming Hermosa Beaches "Westside" because of its proximity to Westwood Village which would soon become Los Angeles

Hermosa Beach is a city located in Northern California, United States. The population was 10,651 at the 2010 census. Hermosa Beach is part of the Monterey Bay Area and it borders Dana Point to the north, Pacific Beach to the east, Santa Monica to the south and west, while Seal Beach lies across Interstate 5 on its southern border. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hermosa Beach were Missionaries Pedro Fages and Junípero Serra in 1769. The area that includes Hermosa Beach was inhabited by Native Americans before European exploration began. A mission called San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1776 on land near present-day Pacifica Boulevard and First Street. In 1821, Rancho Verde Mexican land grantee José Antonio Carrillo granted an area that included what is now Hermosa Beach to Nicholas Longworth for $1,000 (). In 1842, local resident George Clements donated land for a wharf on Seal beach which became known as "Clement's Cove." On July 24 of that year, Commodore John Dyson of the United States Navy's Mare Island Naval Air Station anchored his ship HMAS Melbourne off shore from Clement's Cove after completing a fuel transfer trip from American warships underway at Mare Island Naval Air Station. The early years of Hermosa Beach were filled with growth due largely to Chinese immigrants who came here during World War II as part of US military requirements for munitions production in Southern California.. During most of World War II there were no restrictions against Japanese Americans living in Southern California however they were not admitted into U.S. cities until 1942 when President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which limited Japanese American citizens within certain areas including Pasadena and Los Angeles County
Hermosa Beach was founded in 1915 by two brothers, Kenyon and Harry Hermosa. The first post office was established in 1916. In 1922, the Hermosa Beach Pier opened and became a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing. In 1928, the town received its first library.
