The name "Hermosa" was given by Spanish explorer Captain Gabriel Moraga during his 1769 visit to Southern California Province when he named two peninsulas "Isla de las Mujeres" (Island of Women) after his patron saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 1842, an American army under General Winfield Scott destroyed Mexican cattle herds that had been occupying parts of Orange County since 1819. A town was established at this time called Camarillo but it never grew much due to lack of water or infrastructure. In 1850, following Mexico's admission into the Union as a US state, there began to be an influx of Anglo-American settlers into Southern California seeking new opportunities in what would soon become one of the most rapidly growing regions in America with new mining discoveries being made throughout coastal counties like San Diego and Imperial County including Hermosa Beach which became known as "the Dairy Capital Of The World". In 1860s local blacksmith John Leland built a small brick cottage here known as Leland's Shop which still stands today across from PS1 shopping center on PCH 1 south side - formerly used by insurance companies until recently when it became popularly occupied as a hotel/motel/café inside its own large protected building leased by retail tenants inside its own lobbies overlooking Interstate 5 just east side from current day 9th St intersection).
