Hermosa Beach is a beach town located on the Pacific Coast of California in the United States. The population was 24,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of Los Angeles County. The name derives from Spanish meaning "the golden sand". The first settlement in Hermosa Beach was made by Mexican Americans on May 15, 1849 when José Antonio Reyes and his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto founded Rancho La Brea. In 1854, Pedro Menéndez Cámpora arrived with about 50 followers and established Rancho San Marcos de la Cañada de los Ángeles. On July 14, 1857, Pico Rivera calumniated American soldiers under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican–American War while they were ashore at Monterey Bay and this led to public demonstrations against American military presence in California. In 1870, Captain James Wolkoff of the Navy's Naval Squadron anchored his ship off Hermosa Beach after sailing from Shanghai to patrol off southern California coast as part of Admiral David Dixon Porter's exploration of that area during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. He purchased land near present day Pier 39 for $5 per acre (2% of an acre). Additional purchases followed over time including 1/4 mile wide lots along Hermosa Beach Harbor for $10 each which became known as "Wolkoff Row." From these earliest days until 1915 there were only two buildings in Hermosa Beach - a Methodist church built in 1861 and an Episcopal chapel built in 1865 - both used for storage and services by local farmers and fishermen before conversion into homes later that year. On October 3rd 1915 local citizens met at a hotel called The Pavilion to select a committee to develop plans for what would become Hollywood Boulevard which ran through downtown Los Angeles then crossed Interstate 5 southbound just east of Vine Street where it connected with Highland Avenue leading east to Beverly Hills before turning northwest onto Mulholland Drive reaching its current terminus at Santa Monica Boulevard northeast of downtown Los Angeles on November 8th 1945

The history of Hermosa Beach, California began with the Spanish missionaries who established a ranch in 1821. The area was first inhabited by Ohlone Native Americans and then by Mexicans. In 1847, Juan Bautista de Anza led an army through the area and discovered what is now Hermosa Beach. The mission was abandoned in 1848, but a week later Father Junípero Serra erected a small chapel onslope from Point Lobos Creek to commemorate the discovery. In 1861, Italian immigrants founded their own community in what is now Hermosa Beach. They named it Villa del Bosque after their property owner, José del Bosque y Crespo. The Italians soon left because of difficult living conditions and competition from American settlers. In 1865, Mexican immigrants arrived and started to build homes around Point Lobos Creek. They called their community Frontera because they wanted to be near Los Angeles but were not allowed to cross into America for fear of being deported back to Mexico. In 1886, an act of Congress granted amnesty to all former slaves in California and Hermosa Beach became one of the first cities in California to receive this special status. After years of struggle against discrimination and racism, Latinos gradually assimilated into Anglo society throughout the city until 1965 when passage of Proposition 187 caused many Latinos to move out of town as well as within it for economic reasons. In 1977, Mayor Herb Caen banned handguns on beachfront property because he felt that such weapons would create a safety hazard on our beautiful stretch of sandbar coastline which had become known as "the most gun-free zone in America". This ban remains effective today! Although its beginnings were humble, Hermosa Beach has since evolved into an thriving center for culture and commerce - home to some OFA (Olympic Games) venues including the Hollywood Palladium (now Regal Cinemas), numerous high-end restaurants including L’Atelier at Pacifica Station (now molecular gastronomy restaurant Soma), two major shopping malls - Westfield/ Macy's Park North & Galaxy Mall - as well as several light rail stations serving both local residents and commuters alike; multiple high school campuses; extensive open space; plus more than 100 businesses parkside! It's also served up plenty by waves crashing onto its long shoreline while locals enjoy breakfast tacos or read books outside on blankets during summer days...or sunbathe ondeck atop spanking new Palm Springs condos just across I-5!
