Hermes Beach is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on the Pacific Coast in Santa Barbara County, California. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. It is located about south of downtown Santa Barbara and east of Isla Vista. The first settler in Hermosa Beach was José Garcia who arrived from Mexico in 1818. He built a cabin near present-day Main Street and Vine Street. In 1821, Don Pablo de Anza founded Socorro Colony (later Santa Barbara) on what is now mile marker 193 on U.S. 101 just north of Hermosa Beach Boulevard In 1827, John Cranch landed his ship "Hancock" here after sailing around Cape Horn from San Francisco Bay to Chihuahua; he had come down river from Sonoma Valley via Paso Robles and then up the coast to Agua Caliente before making his way down to Pasadena by boat. His landing marked the beginning of Rancho Las Pulgas which ran due east for about five miles until it reached what is now Military Road (Upper Pompano), where it turned due south and continued along that road into today's Hermosa Beach town limits. Most people associated with Rancho Las Pulgas (and its associated land grants) did not live here long enough to see their holdings developed: many moved away during the Gold Rush period; some were taken over by other ranchers or sold off; still others simply vanished without a trace when ranching became a full-time career in California after 1850). However, for a time there was significant settlement here by Mexicans as well including Mariano Castro who bought part of Rancho las Pulgas southeast of Main Street in 1851 for $2,500 cash plus 5% interest Castro lived here until his death in 1886 . Lopez family also lived at this address briefly before moving back to Los Angeles County . From 1865 through 1926, Arthur Harkness operated Harkness' Store at 256 S Broadway which served as the centerpiece of one block bounded by State Route 1A (now Vineyard Avenue) on the north, State Route 3 (now Sunset Boulevard) on the west, Main Street/Broadway on the south and Günther Strasse (now Pompano Drive) onthe east., later becoming known as The Matrix movie theater
