Hesperia is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The word "Hesperia" comes from Spanish and means "place where wheat grows." The first people to live in what is now Hesperia were Native American traders who traveled through this area during the early 1800s. There are several theories about who founded Hesperia - some say it was Mission San Gabriel which located here; others believe it was Father Miguel de Anza who built Mission Santa Cruz hereabouts in 1824. In 1887, José Sánchez Ibarra purchased land east of current day Hesperia from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1,000USD. He named his new community after his father-in-law's home province of Teruel,. In 1895, Waddell & Wheeler erected a local telephone line between Hearst Ranch and Humboldt Bayou north of present day Hesperia using land donated by Waddell himself. This innovative telephone service remains extant to this day and provides interesting trivia about this particular development including how many phones were actually used within one mile of each other! A post office called Lassen had been established in 1865 but closed its doors on July 14th 1915 due to lack of customers despite being open six days a week! One theory suggests that Lassen may have closed because it could not compete with rates offered by private telco companies such as Western Electric which had begun providing services throughout much of California at this time! One common misconception about Hesperia is that it once consisted only of an agricultural community! Indeed, much development took place within the confines of today's town limits prior to becoming an urban center – most notably across Los Angeles County which bordered Hesperia on both sides approximately 50 years ago! Today, there are several businesses located within walking distance or minutes' drive of both downtown Hesperia proper (containing banks, stores and restaurants) as well as satellite towns like Arroyo Seco further west along Interstate 5; all while still remaining largely rural until very recent times!
