Hesperia is located in the Central Valley of California, about 50 miles east of Fresno. The town was founded by Manuel Nieto in 1846 and named for his hometown of Hesperia, Baja California. The original population numbered only 10 people and the town was abandoned within a year. By 1860, however, the population had grown to 30 and Hesperia was renamed after its new arrivals - Hispanic pioneers who had been attracted to agricultural enterprise in nearby Tulare County. The post office opened on July 1, 1856 and served residents of both Hesperia (the original name) and Villa Nueva de la Frontera (the current name). The first mail brought through the old stagecoach route from Sacramento arrived here on October 3rd, 1856. In 1861, Juan José Sánchez Post Office opened at Hesperia with service extended to Cosumnes River where it now stands. In 1865, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna sent an army into California under orders to overthrow American rule over that state; this army passed through Hesperia enroute to attack Tucson. On November 15th Presidio Captain Tomás Trujillo ordered 20 men from his garrison at San Bernardino to march 800 yards upriver towards Pueblo del Rio where they were joined by 100 more from neighbouring Rancho Viejo Gate City just before dark on November 16th 1870. A combined force composed of Mexican regulars led by Colonel Francisco Ortiz encountered 2 US cavalry companies near present day Apple Valley near Nuestra Senora de los Angeles Cathedral; these skirmishes resulted in no casualties on either side but increased Californian nationalism which would culminate with Mexico's entry into the American Civil War a few months later. On February 5th 1880 Republican candidate James Mescalero won a majority of the vote in an election held pursuant to Article XVIII section 9 of the State Constitution which allowed citizens "to choose between two or three alternatives" including "a political party nominated by their own members", as opposed to being elected via popular vote as previously allowed under Section 11(a). As part of this campaign promise he said he would veto any bill introduced into session that did not include his signature; when this became reality he vetoed several important bills including one creating pensions for state employees – measures that angered many local Democrats who saw himself as essentially taking credit for those policies while feigning neutrality during what they saw as an unconstitutional usurpation of power by Clark & Cardenas administration. "Assemble all your people around me," called Mescalero as he entered Hidalgo Hall moments after midnight on January 17th 1880 following his win over John Jervis Gage in what has come to be known as Gage Day – "and I will tell you how we got together". That night 890 Mexicans gathered at Hidalgo Hall for Mescalero's inauguration ceremony becoming eligible for citizenship due To passage of Proposition 187 later that year – virtually all male Arizonans over 21 years old were given U visas (later lawful permanent resident status) at this time meaning they could work outside U.S borders without fear of deportation back home should their employer go out OF SERVICE! This event signaled beginning steps towards integration into newly nationalized America which would continue throughout much if not all aspects of our lives today."
