Gourmet Coffee History in Hesperia, California began with the first coffee beans being roasted and ground on a family farm in 1925. The Farm to Table movement was born out of this effort to provide delicious, fresh coffee at a fraction of the price of mass-produced coffee. Today, Gourmet Coffee is one of the most popular java brands in the world. One of Gourmet Coffee's earliest investors was Harry McNaught who purchased a share in the company for $2,000 in 1932. The company grew rapidly under McNaught's guidance and by 1938 it had reached its peak production level with an annual output of over 1 million pounds of coffee. In 1945, Harry McNaught passed away leaving his son Tom McNaught as president and head brewer at Gourmet Coffee. Tom McNaught would continue to lead Gourmet Coffee until his death in 1997. Today, Gourmet Coffee operates worldwide with headquarters located in Europe and Asia Pacific Headquarters located in San Francisco Bay Area. Hesperia is located in the far north-central corner of California, and was first settled by the Lassen people in the late 18th century. The area now comprising Hesperia was explored by Captain John C. Frémont in 1846, who named it for his birthplace, Hesperia, Arizona. In 1872, pioneers from Northern California founded a town called Enterprise on the east side of the San Joaquin River. In 1876, they moved their settlement to what is now Hesperia after finding a site on which to build that would be more accessible from river traffic and land prices were low at that time. The first store opened in Hesperia on October 17, 1876. The town quickly grew and became an important center for trade with other parts of California as well as Oregon and Nevada. In 1888, when Interstate 5 was created, Hesperia became one of its original termini. The population of Hesperia peaked at 509 in 1920 but declined over the next several decades due to various factors including World War II (1939-1945), drought (1951-1957), automobile development (1960s-1970s), and changes within California itself such as increased development along I-5 corridor outside of town limits. However, recent economic improvements have seen a resurgence in activity around town with new businesses opening up along old routes like Simi Valley Road and Pico Boulevard
Hesperia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Merced metropolitan area. The name Hesperia comes from Spanish "hispania" meaning "Island of the Hissar". The first post office in Hesperia was established on December 12, 1881 by J. W. Fenton with the name of Rancho El Cajon. When US 90 was built through Hesperia in 1922 and became known as State Route 190, rancho El Cajon reverted to its original name and no longer served as a post office.
