Hesperia is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was estimated to be 41,565 as of 2018. It is the county seat of Kern County and has been since 1853. Hesperia is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and covers an area of . The town began as a small settlement called Oak Flat by cattle ranchers in 1879. In 1903, they moved their ranch headquarters from Springerville to Hesperia to make way for new development. By 1912, the town had become an agricultural center with over 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares) of land irrigated with canals and streams. The death in 1913 of Hesperia's postmaster made it the first US city to have no mail service until 1973. Hesperia is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The first settlers in what would become Hesperia arrived in 1847 fromagent Juan Bautista Alvarado's Rancho Conchita. In 1851, the name "Hesperia" was given to a land grant by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Ignacio Lopez de Portilla and his family. In 1875, following the Mexican-American War, Tesoriño Vallejo granted an additionalounty called Rancho Atascosa to José MarÃa Cámpora and Pedro Fierro for their military services during that war. In 1888, two brothers named Harry and William Sargent opened a grocery store in Hesperia with $5 they had won at a fair. The store became very successful and soon there were four stores in Hesperia selling groceries and other assorted items. By 1912 there were 10 stores operating in Hesperia with a total sales of over $100,000 annually. After World War II, grocery store sales dwindled but continued until the early 1990s when word spread about how good local produce could be found at various farmers markets throughout Fresno County so new grocery stores began opening up all over including Hesperia which helped revive local retail businesses around the county. Several current supermarkets including Safeway have been located within one mile of each other since opening their initial locations; making it easy for residents to get their groceries without having to go out of town
