Hesperia, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in the San Joaquin Valley on the east side of the San Joaquin River. Hesperia was founded in 1887 by Captain George Armstrong and his family as Hesperia Rancho de las Pulgas. In 1912, it was incorporated as a city. Hesperia has a temperate climate with hot summers and mild winters; average monthly temperatures range from . According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Hesperia has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb". The area that now includes Hesperia was part of three large Mexican land grants given to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1833: Rancho Nuevo de las Pulgas (New Place of Pigs), Rancho Viejo de las Pulgas (Old Place of Pigs), and Rancho Seco de la Pulga (Greene's Secured). The area became part of Kern County when it was created in 1907. In 1912, City Manager Harry Cook petitioned for incorporation because he felt that there were no proper schools or health clinics in the community. On April 15th 1914, Hesperia voters passed an ordinance establishing city government with a mayor and seven council members. The first meeting of the city council took place on October 3rd 1914. On December 4th 1915 Mayor Cook proposed that citizens name their city after General Pershing who had fought during World War I for America; however this proposal failed to win approval from the council. On January 5th 1916 Mayor Cook renamed the city Hesperia after General John J Pershing who had led American forces into Mexico during World War I as Commander-in-Chief United States Forces Mexico City Expeditionary Force which liberated Mexico from Spanish rule. Until 1959 when major reclamation projects began reducing peak water levels within Hetch Hetchy Reservoir due to increased development near river mouth and lack of flood control infrastructure nearby, much of what is now downtown Hesperia consisted only of brownfields strewn over many acres along both banks of river until current day redevelopment efforts have transformed these brownfields into vibrant neighborhoods complete with new businesses and residences Some notable old buildings still standing include: First Presbyterian Church (built 1865), Masonic Lodge #1 (founded 1868), Citizens Bank Building (1915) & Post Office Tower (1920). Hesperia is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded by Mormon settlers in 1851. The population of Hesperia peaked at 584 in 1940, but has since decreased to just over 100 residents. The Hesperia post office was established on February 14, 1851, and continued operation until it was discontinued on March 15, 1957. The first settler in Hesperia was Joseph A. Smith from Palmyra, New York. He and his family arrived in the areaon May 10th, 1851 and built the initial cabin near the present day intersection of Alma Street and Coldwater Lane. Hesperia's growth as a rural community was slow due to its isolation from other settlements within San Bernardino County at that time. However, with the opening of the Central Valley Railroad in 1855 which connected Los Angeles with Fresno via Hesperia, Hesperia began to experience increased development. In 1860, Mormon pioneers George Wickenburg and his wife Susannah Hanks moved to Hesperia from Palmdale where they had been living for several years after emigrating from England under military escort during the Utah War of 1850-1859. They took up land northwest of their original cabin site on Coldwater Lane which they named Wickenburg Ranch after George Washington Wickenburg who had served as lieutenant colonel leading an attack against Geronimo at Fort Tejon during Mexican–American War (1846-48). After some struggles adapting to their new location they were joined by their two children who were only eight months old when they left for Utah; however 9 year old Josiah Stowell stayed behind to help his father with ranching operations while he went off to serve in the Ulysses S Grant’s army during World War II as a scout sergeant . The post office closed down due largely to competition from neighboring towns such as Redlands which had larger populations and more developed postal systems at that time; however local citizens kept using the post office facilities until it finally became unusable around 1959 when all service ended because of budget cuts by then Governor Jerry Brown following passage of Proposition 13 (the “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision). In its final days before closure there were occasional deliveries through local window boxes but no mail ever arrived becauseimerically all outgoing messages were delivered electronically into state government computer systems instead thanks primarily to volunteer efforts by email correspondents like myself!
