Hesperia is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 10,813 at the 2010 census. Hesperia is located on the north side of the San Joaquin Valley and is part of the Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Hesperia comes from Spanish "hacienda" meaning estate or rancho. The first European to visit this area was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769, while travelling through what is now Kern County on his way to explore northern California. He named this area Campo de las Minas (Monte Cristobal) after a small hill he saw near Tomales (part of today's Sonoma County). A post office called Hesperia was established in 1857, and remains in operation today. In 1892, a group of businessmen began developing land east of present-day Hesperia for shipment of crops to markets in San Francisco Bay. They named their new company Rancho Caspian after an outcropping of hardwood about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Hesperia on what is now Blytheville Road. This land had been claimed by Juan Bautista Alvarado, one of Mexico's last independent chiefs who had surrendered his title to Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War. American citizens José Ortega and Bartolo Pico purchased someahuasca mushrooms from Inca Indians near present-day Murphysboro before landing at Monterey Bay on August 29, 1897; they then traveled inland along what is now Highway 1 and camped at Islay Park beside Lake Oroville where they discovered potash mining operations started by Russian settlers in 1853 nearby at Russel Creek Mining District No. 5 next to Islay Park before being formalized as Russley Mines & Potash Company with its original headquarters at 320 El Camino Real south Ofpresent-day Hwy 1 between Russley Mines Rd./Alameda Ave./Pablo Beach Rd./Islay Park Dr./El Camino Real Sec . 3 map . Hesperia was founded in 1848 by Captain George W. Hesperia and his wife, Anna. It became a dry goods store and post office on the San Joaquin River. The first settlers were farmers who grew cotton and other crops. In 1853, the Post Office moved to its present location on the corner of First Street and Railroad Avenue. The town prospered as a railroad town because it had access to trains that brought goods from eastern California to the local market. By 1860, there were 7 businesses in Hesperia, including a millinery shop, general store, bakery, hotel, and doctor's office. Business growth slowed after the Civil War but resumed after Reconstruction began in America in 1865. After World War II, Hesperia experienced significant population growth due to farmworkers coming for work in the burgeoning agricultural industry; however, this prosperity ended following the oil crisis of 1970-1971
