The history of the navy in Hesperia, California goes back to the early 1800s. The area was first inhabited by the native peoples, and early residents of Hesperia were known as the “Napa Nippers” because they lived near Napa River. In 1824, Captain James Cook sailed through these waters on his famous exploration expedition and named the area Hesperia after General Manuel Nieto, who had led an army into California in 1776. The name stuck and today Hesperia is one of Northern California's most vibrant communities with a rich naval history. The first recorded mention of a navy in this area was in 1846 when Commodore John D. Stockton founded Fort Stockton on the mouth of the Sacramento River. This fortification was important for protecting shipping lanes on the Pacific Ocean and played a significant role during Mexican-American War (1846-48). During World War II, Naval Air Station Catalina served as a vital airbase for American forces fighting in North Asia. After World War II ended, NAS Catalina became home to Navy Reserve Squadron VF-2 “Albatros” which flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes from 1945 until 1949. NAS Catalina also hosted Marine Aircraft Group 36 (MAG-36) during Operation Neptune's Spear ( December 1951 – January 1952), which saw combat against Chinese forces invading Hong Kong. In 1977 NAS Catalinas operations base closed due to budget cuts but reopened in 1984 as Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Hesperia/Porter Air Force Base providing storage for F/A-18 Hornets then being used at Davis–Monthan AFB AZ among other duties Until its closure again effective Sep 1 2007 Naval Air Station Patuxent River located just east of modern day Bowie will take over responsibility for both stations . Hesperia is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 4,253 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Hesperia was George and Mary Copley on December 22, 1851, while they were on their honeymoon from England. They named their land "Hesperia" after Hesperia Ranch in central California where they had been living for two years before coming to the US. In 1853, James Fenton moved to Hesperia from Stockton and became one of its early residents. The first post office in Hesperia was established in 1868. By 1880, there were six businesses in the town with a total payroll of $2,000. Business grew rapidly during the late 19th century as agriculture became more important in the local economy and migrants from Northern California began settling here to work on large cotton farms or ranching operations. The plant production revolutionized American agriculture during this time and brought new wealth and jobs to rural areas across America; however, huge investments by industrialists throughout western Kern County led to economic decline for Hesperia starting around World War II due to declinespective inputs into industry relative to population growth rates nationally which favored other nearby towns (Bakersfield and Porterville). In 1954, most of what is now downtown Hesperia was burned down by an arsonist who had planned to damage several dozen commercial buildings that constituted over half of all retail business within 500 feet of his target market spot outside of town limits; despite extensive law enforcement response including helicopters flying overhead as part of a saturation operation dubbed "Operation Flare," no arrests were made resulting only in dozens fine citations issued instead of any jail time or criminal prosecutions being meted out against perpetrators After decades of steady loss due largely due changes wrought by outside forces – primarily suburban sprawl – increasing numbers people began moving into downtown Hsopiania beginningaround 2000 when attempts were made by city officials (led by Mayor Russ Nover)to redevelop portions east off Center Street adjacent Interstate 5 for residential development along with much-needed job/business space options with plans for light rail transit serving downtown via stop at Central Avenue Transit Terminal soon becoming reality However progress stalled when city leaders decided not pursue redevelopment beyond 2020 citing concerns about water availability/quality given rising levels associated with climate change . As a result today much key infrastructure such as restrooms/ceilings/parking garages has yet To be replaced or updated following various floods that have occurred over recent years leading some residents near extinction (see below) In recent years there has been renewed interest among city leaders led by Mayor Russ Nover creating cohesive community partnerships including working together on developing mixed-use projects such as a hotel & conference center jointly funded through private investors; electric vehicle charging systems & parkings lot expansion jointly funded through state grants; affordable housing developments jointly funded through federal dollars; arts programming jointly funded through Caltrans funds etcetera while also investing millions more dollars each year into needs like graffiti removal & streetlights

The post office at Hesperia was founded on December 12, 1868, and was renamed to Hesperia on November 3, 1870. The first settlers in Hesperia were farmers who leased land from the Ayer Rancho Cucamonga Mexicans. In 1875 the United States government acquired the Ayer Rancho Cucamonga lands and opened them up for settlement by American citizens. The town site was chosen because it had good water access, cheap land, and no hills. The Town of Hesperia was platted in 1876 by Elisha Gray and Harsha Kapp as part of an effort to promote development along the river banks near Fresno. Other towns built around this time included Los Angeles (1877), Porterville (1879), Sacramento (1881), San Bernardino (1884), Yuba City (1902), Placerville (1906), Emeryville (1908) and Dixon(1910). In 1912 there were only 350 residents in Hesperia; by 1920 it had grown to 1,500 with a post office, grocery store, bank account and several businesses. During World War I the local armaments plant operated by Meserve Arms produced munitions for General Pershing's forces. After World War II many jobs went away as production shifted to Asia but the community never lost its identity as a manufacturing center until recently when most of those jobs went away too In 1951 Hesperia approved plans for two large shopping malls: one east of downtown called Apple Valley Plaza while another west of downtown called Golden West Plaza However both projects never came to fruition due to budget restrictions In 1969 Proposition 13 passed which put an end to most city operations except police services
