Hesperia is located in the eastern Mojave Desert and was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847. The town was named for Hesperia, California, a small Mexican community that had been established on the same site as present-day Hesperia about two years earlier. The first post office in Hesperia was established on July 1, 1847. In 1848, the town became a county seat of Mono County and received its own school district. By 1860, Hesperia had a population of about 350 people and it consolidated with neighboring Gorda to form the new city of Hesperia in 1912. When Californication began to take hold in California, miners from nearby towns such as Butteville started moving into Hesperia to prospect for gold and silver. By 1880, there were more than 2,000 residents living in Hesperia proper and it had become one of the most important mining communities in California. The city prospered even during times of tough economic times and saw an increase in its exports during World War II when heavy wartime production necessitated larger quantities of goods than could be shipped directly from mines within California. Ashesville also played a critical role during the development of freeway construction across Southern California during the early 1970s; many local businesses were involved in providing materials and labor for road construction projects throughout the state. Today, remnants of old buildings still dot the landscape around Hesperia; these include residences built between 1915 and 1925 by developers who hoped to revive pueblo-style architecture along central Mesa Street near downtown (now known as Mesa Boulevard). The buildings are now used as offices or other commercial properties adjacent to an elementary school that serves area students from pre-K through eighth grade. Although few citizens remain within ancient boundaries which once delimited what is now part of present day Hesperia—the majority reside outside its limits today—the city has experienced significant growth over time due to its location within easy access both carpooling and public transportation options available statewide via I-5 or State Route 101 corridor linking Los Angeles County with Imperial County just south of Phoenix
