In 1927, Hesperia became the seat of Kern County when it was created from sections of Los Angeles and Tehachapi counties. The population grew rapidly during World War II due to military activity and new agricultural production; by 1950, it had reached 2,000 people. However, after the war ended, Hesperia experienced significant economic decline; its population decreased by half between 1945 and 1960. Most recently, however, enhanced infrastructure and growth along Interstate 5 have led to renewed development within Hesperia proper as well as growth elsewhere in Kern County attributable to new jobs opportunities associated with interstate travel throughout California.

The Hesperia area was first populated in the late 1800s. The name is derived from a word meaning "place of many waters." In 1849, gold was discovered in the area, and the town quickly grew. By 1865, Hesperia had a population of 10,000 people. Throughout the years, Hesperia has made numerous contributions to California culture and history.
