The area was first populated by Native Americans, who were known as the Yokuts. These people hunted and gathered plants and animals for food, but they also built villages near water resources to protect their land from Spanish exploration. In 1846, Mexican settlers arrived in what is now Highland after being forced out of California by General Antonio López de Santa Anna. They founded a small town called San Fernando on the slopes of Mount Shasta. After years of development, San Fernando was abandoned in 1872 because of a lack of water supplies. The first European to set foot on what is now Highland, California was the Spanish conquistador Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776. The land that is now part of the city of Berkeley was claimed by Alta California in 1821 when Mexico won a war with United States over who would control the area. The city of Berkeley was founded in 1847 as a result of this conflict and it became an important stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1868, the city merged with Oakland to form what is today Oakland.
