In 1848, the United States acquired Rancho San Vicente, a land grant in present-day Highland, California. The Rancho Padres de Alta California had been founded by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1776 and was part of the Mexican grants that were given to American settlers. In 1848, following the Mexican–American War, the US bought the entire rancho from Mexico for $10,000. The first occupants of Rancho San Vicente were Father Miguel de la Luz and his brothers José and Fernando. Father Miguel arrived in 1849 and began building a mission at what is now known as Mission Dolores. In 1850, José Menéndez de Avilés married into one of Father Miguel's daughters and took up permanent residence at Mission Dolores with his new wife. From here he supervised construction of other missions in present-day Highland including St. Mary's (1853), Nuestra Señora del Rosario (1855) and La Merced (1858). In 1854 Dona Mercedes y Crespí purchased part of Rancho San Vicente from Father Miguel for $8500 dollars after her husband died. She continued to live there until her death in 1865 when it came under control of her granddaughter Mercedes y Crespí once more. It passed through several hands before it finally became part of the State of California on November 9th 1889 pursuant to an Act of Congress called "An Act to adjust certain properties withinAlameda County" (). Rancho San Vicente remained unencumbered until 1912 when portions were sold off to various individuals or businesses such as The Great Western Railroad Company which laid tracks across it between 1917-1920; developer Edwin Sanger who built a large home on Steuben Street near its intersection with Highland Boulevard in 1951; current owner Jeff Adelson who has resided there since 1978
