Highland is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Highland is located east of Bakersfield and north of Fresno. It is part of the Fresno–Chico–Dominguez Hills Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the time of the first American census in 1790, there were only two villages in Kern County: Kerman and Chico. In 1821, when Mexico ceded California to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, both Kerman and Chico became part of what is now Highland. The name "Highland" originated with a grant from Rancho Los Alamos given to David Barbour by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on February 15, 1826. The first post office was established at Highland on October 24, 1872; it was moved to its present site in 1880. The first school was opened in Highland on December 4th by Mrs. Willie Brownell (1815-1904). Mrs. Brownell taught school for six weeks each day until her pupil could attend public schools nearby in Dominguez Hills or Tulare City proper which were then open for one week per month during winter months because no school buildings had been built yet elsewhere within Kern County! Today's high school building was completed in 1984 just south of downtown area which gives you an idea that some things have changed since then!
