It wasn’t until 1925 that another Highland cafe emerged – The Hermitage Café on Seventh Avenue. At the Hermitage Café, customers could enjoy freshly roasted beans from around the world at their own fingertips. This unique experience was not possible at other Highlands cafes until after World War II when roast shops opened up all across Northern California to support war production. After returning home from war service, many Highlands businessmen decided to open their own cafes – including Harry Sheppard who founded The Flying Dutchman Coffee House on Sixth Street in 1949). Highland, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population was 5,847 at the 2010 census and is estimated to be 6,719 by 2020. Highland is located in Butte County and occupies the eastern edge of Yosemite National Park. The name "Highland" first appeared on maps in 1851 when it was part of Rancho Negro de la Luz y Ulloa which was acquired by John C. Frémont from Rafael Carrillo de Mendoza. The original homesteaders were American Civil War veterans who settled near today's Highway 395 and Indian Wells Creek. The first large-scale commercial plantations were established in Brazil by slave traders looking for new markets for their products. The importation of African slaves into Europe led to a decline in prices, so Englishmen started importing Brazilian coffee instead. As this happened, Coffee became more expensive and less accessible to everyday people who couldn’t afford it. In 1855, Frenchman Pierre-Emile Cugat imported 5200 metric tons of coffee from Brazil – making it the world’s largest shipment ever at that time. With increasing international trade came increased competition for resources such as land and labor; this caused a decrease in prices and made Brazilian coffee less available to everyday people worldwide catchable again

Highland, California is located in the San Joaquin Valley on the border of Oregon and Nevada. The valley was first inhabited by American Indians, who called it Shasta. In 1847, gold was discovered in the area and several ranchos were founded to exploit this new discovery. In 1848, a treaty was made between the United States and Mexico which recognized Mexican sovereignty over part of what is now California. By 1850, however, American settlers had become increasingly interested in developing this undeveloped land, and a number of small ranches were established in what is now Highland County. In 1852, an act was passed by Congress recognizing the rights of Mexican nationals residing within California as well as citizens of other countries who had legal residency within that state. This act created a population explosion within California due to waves of immigration from all over Latin America. The following year saw the founding of numerous communities throughout Highland County including Anacapa (now part of Santa Cruz), Redondo Beach, Playa del Carmen (now part of Mexicali), Islip (now part of Babylon), Tomales Bay (now part of Portola Valley), etc. These settlements quickly emerged as hubs for social life and commerce within their respective regions; each enjoyed its own unique culture and history which continues to influence today’s residents. The early years at Highlands were difficult for both farmers and miners; both groups faced challenges obtaining essential inputs such as water supplies and transportation to destinations near production sites. However, through hard work and perseverance these pioneers eventually became dominant forces in local society. At times this dominance came at a cost: migrants often brought with them theirnative cultures and traditions which clashed bitterly with those living nearby; this tension often boiled over into violence or even conflict. Nevertheless, despite these challenges Highlander resilienceremains unparalleled; today’s community has blossomed thanks largely to its shared love for nature and entrepreneurship!
Highland, California was founded in 1853 by Theodor Irvine. It became a census-designated place in 1959 and was officially incorporated as a city on November 15, 1960.
