Highland, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,642 at the 2010 census. Highland has been inhabited by Native Americans for many years and is now a part of the Kern County Unified School District. The name "Highland" comes from the Spanish word "huella" meaning hill or mountain. The first people to live in what is now Highland were the Tongva People who moved here from Southern California around 1700. At that time, there were several hills in this area and they named one of them "Huella". The first European settlers arrived in 1839 when Captain John Cranch discovered gold near today's downtown Highland. He claimed this area as part of his Rancho Niguel land grant and set up camp among the indigenous people known as Puebloan Indians. Some of these early Anglo-Americans helped pioneer what would become Highland. One such person was James Ayris who settled here in 1849 after traveling through Mexico andCentral America on an exploration trip organized by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. Since its creation as a school district in 1972, Highland has seen some great changes! Today, it is home to over 1,000 students from diverse backgrounds including Hispanic-, African-American-, Asian-Pacific Islander- and American Indian/Alaska Native students along with any number of other families with children attending local schools within our boundaries! In addition to its educational opportunities, Highland also offers extracurricular programs like soccer (the Highlander Soccer Club), golf (the Highlands Golf Club), theater (Actors Horizons), dance (Dance Unlimited) and more!

Highland, California is a small town in the northern portions of Los Angeles County. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. Highland's history goes back to 1853 when it was part of Rancho San Pedro Mexican land grant to José Antonio Yorba and his brother Juana Pico Yorba. In 1881, with the creation of Kern County, Highland became a part of that county. The first person to reside in Highland was José Antonio Yorba who moved from Mexico in 1853 and arrived in what is now Highlands on December 12th, 1853. He named his new community "Haltom" after General James Haltom who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Mr. Yorba did not have any children so he sold all his land except for a small piece adjacent to present day Highland High School which still remains today as the Yorba House Museum complex. The first schoolhouse built in Highlands was located on present day Moorpark Avenue just south of Hermosa Beach Boulevard and opened its doors on March 11th, 1854 under the name "María Elena Costilla." Mrs. Costilla taught school until her death on October 20th, 1897 also at this same building which later served as home for Highland's first post office and then as a grocery store before being converted into a house museum complex later known as the "Yorba House Museum." In 1907 when Kern County was created it included much of what is now Glassell Park including Highland along with other towns such as Glendale and Carson City . On November 15th 1907 local residents voted by referendum to change their name from Glassell Park to Highland due to its location within Kern County rather than Glassell Park which was within Los Angeles County . On May 6th 1915 an act passed by Congress designating parts of Los Angeles County - specifically Rancho San Pedro - as Specialty Areas outside of Pasadena whereupon all landowners within these areas became citizens thereof subject to taxation by government officials according to various laws existing at that time including Registration Laws etc.. This act designated specific parcels within these special areas including ranchos owned by Mexican Americans residing therein whereby they were exempted from paying municipal taxes (which would have been assessed against them) but were required (by law) to register their property with government officials prior thereto thereby becoming liable for special assessments provided they possessed proper documentation etc.. When Hollywood took form manyMexican American families who resided in those areas made up much of its early population although some eventually left Hollywood for greener pastures elsewhere such as Orange or Riverside Counties etc.. Although many originally left Hollywood because there were no major movie studios available here they gradually started returning over time once Paramount Pictures established itself here back in 1926 followed by others such as Universal Studios whom founded their own studio here in 1930 .. Finally following Expo '86 when Valley Village emerged rapidlyAdded residential development throughout these years generally pushing out businesses situated near downtown housing values continue appreciate increasing ever since reaching $200M+ currently ..

In 1857, Highland was founded as a small town by men from Northern California who were looking for new land to farm. By 1907, Highland had a population of over 120 people and was home to several businesses including a flour mill, sawmill, bank and hotel. In 1915, the citys first school was built and it continued to grow until it was replaced by the current building in 1978.
