The United States Army was founded on April 6, 1775, in Hillsborough County, California. The first American soldier to die in the Mexican-American War was Private George Armstrong who died of a fever on October 20, 1847 at the age of 24. On November 15, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated a new military facility in Hillsborough to the memory of Private First Class John S. Ewbank who was killed in action during World War I. The Hillsborough Area Army National Guard was organized on December 1, 1907. The first unit to be activated was the 124th Infantry Regiment which arrived in San Francisco on December 5th. On December 18th, the regiment left for a two-month deployment to Los Angeles. The regiment arrived at Fort Monroe on January 4th and took up defensive positions around that city.
Hillsborough is a city in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 20,752 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Sonoma County after Petaluma. Hillsborough is located on the east side of Napa River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of San Francisco and 25 miles (40 km) south of Sausalito. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hillsborough were Canadian fur traders in 1836. A small town began to form around this time; it was named for Colonel John C. Hills, an early settler who platted the area that includes present-day Hillsborough and built two sawmills thereabouts. In 1847, the American Civil War led to troop movements throughSonoma County and parts of Marin County as part of General Mariano Castro's Front Royal Expedition against Ulysses S. Grant's Army of Northern California. The towns along both banks of the Napa River were extensively burned by Union forces during this battle; many homes still stand today within these former battlefields. In 1865, following the end of World War II, large numbers of veterans returned home from overseas service and began moving into newly developed areas such as Salinas and Novato; consequently, some businesses vacated their locations near Highway 29/Upper Big Sur between Ridgefield Road and Highway 1 west of town and moved into new sites east or southeast of town on land that had been given away by local farmers as part of postwar giveaways to veteran families returning from World War II combat zones abroad or interned at Fort Bragg or elsewhere in North America. After years during which only a few people lived in Hillsborough proper – until its incorporation as a city on January 14th 1959 – growth accelerated rapidly throughout much OFSUSTRYLAND northwestward including northeast portions annexed by neighboring cities over time (the most recent annexation taking place in 1996).
