The Hillsborough Coffee Company was founded in 1894 by German immigrants, Johannes and Caroline Kessel. The company began making coffee in a small family-owned grocery store on the corner of Hillsborough Boulevard and Raymond Street. In 1916, the company moved to its current location at 1501 W. Randolph Road in Hillsborough. The Kessels were founding members of the National Coffee Association and continued to work at the company until their death in 1951. In 1958, John Daugherty became president of the Hillsborough Coffee Company and remained in that position until his retirement in 1990.
Hillsborough is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 23,853 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Luis Obispo County after Santa Cruz. The name "Hillsborough" was first given to the area by Captain John Sutter in 1827 when he named it for Colonel Richard Hills of Boston. The settlement at what is now Hillsborough dates back to 1824 when Mission San José de Velasco erected a mission here for the Franciscans and their Indian converts known as the Pueblo of San Fernando de Asís. In 1827, Captain John Sutter named this part of San Luis Obispo county after his friend and mentor, General Manuel Micheletti. General Micheletti had just completed his victory over Mexican troops at Buena Vista Hill on November 8th, 1825 and had now become governor of California following Mexico's repudiation of Alta California's sovereignty under Governor Ygnacio Moreno y Salinas. On January 12th, 1830, General Micheletti delivered an address before a joint meeting of both Houses of Congress recognizing American independence from Spain. This event is commemorated with a statue located outside the Capitol building in Washington D.C., dedicated to Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885), one of America's greatest Generals during its early days as a republic

In 1876, the town of Hillsborough was founded in the southern part of San Diego County. The first post office in Hillsborough was established on Jan. 1, 1877. In 1912, the name of the town was changed to Orange and it became an incorporated city on Jan. 15, 1917. Hillsborough is a small city located on the coast of Orange County and is known for its beaches, nightlife and shopping centers. It is also home to Hillsborough High School which has been ranked as one of California's top high schools for many years. The mascot for Hillsborough High School is "The Trojans." The history of Hillsborough began with Adam Sutter who settled there in 1849. He built a house on what is now State Route 66 near present-day Costa Mesa Boulevard and named it Sutterville after his father-in-law, Herman Sutter. At that time area consisted only of brush and sand hills overlooking open ocean1 Although Adam Catto had settled nearby in 1862 he did not develop anything at that time2 But when he died in 1865 his son John Denton Catto took over development3 It was during this time period that another prominent figure in early Hillsborough affairs was Prentice Mather4 Mather bought some land adjoining state route 66 from Jacob Guggenheim5 who had earlier sold it to Aaron Burr6 For two years Mather lived at what would later be called Burr House7 In 1868 Prentice’s brother Amos offered him 128 acres8 This property formed what would become Irvine Park9 In 1870 Don Pedro Menéndez10 purchased three hundred acres east of present day State Route 16511 From here men mined gold until 191512 When Menéndez died young his heirs divided his property among themselves13 On Feb 17th 1911 Captain Charles Fife14 donated land south of present day State Route 166 (now Marine Drive) facing Newport Beach15 From here men developed seafood fisheries16 After World War II most fishing activity stopped but there are still some seagull operations taking place off Manzanita Beach17 today's Marina Del Rey forms much of eastern boundary line between Irvine Park & Santa Monica Bay
