A few years later, The Kress family purchased the business from Kroger and operated it as their own store until 1978 when they sold it to The Rheingold Corporation. It was then that Mrs. Mary Rheingold reopened the store as the present-day First Place Shopping Center which continues to serve the community today!

Hillsborough is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 20 miles east of Fresno and 60 miles south of Stockton. Hillsborough was founded in 1853 by Captain James H. Hill and his brother-in-law, Colonel Edwin Drake. The City of Hillsborough was incorporated on February 7, 1856, and the first city council meeting took place on February 10. On December 12, 1861, the United States acquired Rancho Seco from Mission Santa Clara de Asis for $8 million in what is now part of Riverside County. The City Council voted to annex that land into the City on January 9, 1865. In 1870, Pacific Gas Transmission Company constructed a pipeline from San Bernardino to Needles (now Kern County), which started service in October 1870. In 1897–98 when Southern Pacific Railroad built a line through Hillsborough I stations it slumped financially because it needed to bring goods into Los Angeles much cheaper than using wagons that had to be pulled by horses or mules over rough terrain covered with chaparral and earth banks
