Hillsborough is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. The city is located east of San Bernardino on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and adjacent to Riverside County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hillsborough were Spanish settlers who built a mission in 1769. Rancho Laguna de las Palmas was granted to José Manuel Marquez by Governor Pico de la Mirada on November 15, 1771. The mission was abandoned in 1827 after succumb to an attack by Indians led by Juan Bautista Alisal who called himself "Vaca Roca". In 1882, citrus farmer James Fenton purchased land from Marquez which included what is now downtown Hillsborough. In 1888 he organized a group of investors and began developing his new town named after him – James Fenton City (later renamed Hillsborough). The first store opened in 1888 and soon became an important local economic center with many businesses catering to farmers and ranchers as well as various other interests including hotels, restaurants, lumber yards and breweries. By 1919 over 60% of the workforce in Hillsborough were employed within McCarthy-Lagrange Paper Company which still exists today with its headquarters on Main Street between Seventh Street and Eighth Street. One hundred years ago this company processed more than 12 million pounds of paper! Although McCarthy-Lagrange has been closed since 1992 it continues to be a major employer in our community with over 350 employees today!
