The town of Hillsborough in Fresno County, California was founded by Latter Day Saints on December 12, 1847. The original residents were Quakers and Methodist ministers. The town was named for the hills that overlooked it. So they built a rail station on the site in 1859, which made it possible for them to sell their products to other parts of the country. By 1907, Hillsborough had a population of 585 people and was considered one of Fresno County's "business centers." It thrived during World War I because its large phosphate mine produced munitions for America's war effort. However, after the war ended, industry declined in Hillsborough as did population growth until World War II when it again experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location at Highway 99W between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
