Hillsborough is located on the shore of San Dieguito Bay and its namesake hilltops are visible from much of downtown. The City of Hillsborough was incorporated on November 14, 1911. This led to the growth of businesses such as Sears & Roebuck (1914), Joplin Paper Co.(1920), Paramount Pictures (1926), MGM (1929) and Ford Motor Company (1935). The discovery of oilseed rape in 1937 led to increased production at nearby Imperial Oil Field #5; by 1941 there were more than 150 businesses clustered around Pioneer Square shopping center including Macy's Department Store (now Macy's Herald Square Center). By 1960 there were only 10 businesses remaining Downtown while new development had started up along Harbor Boulevard northward beyond Pioneer Square including modern skyscrapers like First National Bank Building(now Wells Fargo Tower)), Staples Center(Lloyd Blankfein Plaza)), Twitter(Square One Arena))and numerous other tech companies like Uber(Uber Technologies Inc.), Airbnb(founder Eduardo Saverin’s former office building)and KFC( founder Colonel Sanders' original restaurant at 1225 Third Street). Hillsborough is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The name "Hillsborough" honors Colonel James A. Hills and his wife Anna Hill (née Purdy), both of whom were killed in the 1929 Los Angeles earthquake. The first settler in Hillsborough was Jedediah Smith, who arrived on horseback in 1827 from New Mexico. He named his new land "Hillsborough." In 1849, Colonel James A. Hills purchased some of Smith's land and built a mill thereon which still stands today. In 1852, he married Anna Hill and they moved to their new home where they raised six children: William H.,Anna L., Clara E., John F., Helen G., and Everett W.). In 1886, the American Pacific Railroad reached Hillsboro through the town and began serving as a transportation backbone for rural Kern County until it was segments into several divisions in 1969 . The oldest active business still located within town limits is the J&J Grocery Store which has been open continuously since 1912 when it was founded by Mrs. J &J Kerr with assistance from her husband Jim Kerr Sr.. Other longstanding businesses include the First National Bank (founded 1909) and Tomlinson's Hardware (established 1907). The post office opened on September 11, 1896 under name of Fillmore; it changed its name to Hillsborough on May 14, 1899 due to objections from neighboring towns that had similar namesakes- Fillmore being too close to San Francisco while also having an abbreviation for "Borough". On November 5th 1890 a fire destroyed most of downtown Fillmore but not before receiving donations from local citizens including prominent lawyer Samuel Latham Carr who donated $500 towards rebuilding efforts which included setting up a committee chaired by Mayor George Dillingham that would select architects for a new courthouse site which would be located near what is now known as Main Street (). Construction began onsite on December 1st 1892 using private funds provided by Carr along with significant government subsidies including federal muni bonds worth $5 million dollars Obtained during president Harrison's administration.. On July 15th 1907 another major fire burned down almost entire Fillmore destroying much property but not before receiving contributions again including $2,000 given by future Governor Hiram Johnson who also contributed toward rebuilding efforts according to plans set up by city planners under direction of City Engineer Charles Babbage (). For many years after this event downtown fillmore consisted mostly of charred foundations and smoldering debris remaining from previous fires however over timeetermined elements such as brick sidewalks/pavement replaced broken metal gates/doors etc... Today downtown fillmore consists mostly of reconstructed original architecture with few if any remnants remaining from earlier periods
