Hillsborough, California is located in the San Joaquin Valley and has a long military history. The city was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s and was known as the "Valley of the Moon." In 1856, Captain John C. Fremont organized and led a group of American Indians to establish a settlement at Rancho San Pablo in present-day Hillsborough. After years of testing, Fremont's colony became successful and during their time there, they founded what is now known as Yosemite National Park. In 1873, after becoming president of California, Ulysses S. Grant sent troops to Hillsborough to quell an insurrection against his rule. The city was placed under martial law until 1865 when it reverted to civilian control following the end of the American Civil War. During this time, Hillsborough saw its share of combat including engagements at Monterrey on July 13th, 1881 during the Spanish-American War; Yuba River Campaign on November 6th-8th; Stockton Strike on December 12th; and Battle of Cristobal Heights on May 10th-11th 1914 during World War I. After World War I ended, Hillsborough experienced rapid growth with new development that continues to this day such as downtown housing developments (now called The Bend), Hillsborough State University (HSU), and numerous businesses and restaurants along Interstate 5. In 1960, prior to Measure G being passed which authorized annexation by Livermore Valley*, Hillsborough became part of Livermore County*. Today, Hillshire farms are still used for grazing purposes while Livermore Valley is home to major employers such as Dow Chemical Co., Intel Corp., Google parent company Motorola Mobility Inc., Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co., Oracle Corporation*, Facebook*Palo Alto* valley], Twitter*Redwood City*, Safeway* El Sobrante*/Salinas*/Fremont*/Sunnyvale*/Belmont*/Enderlin/*etc.). The Hillsborough-based 9th Infantry Regiment has been deployed to Afghanistan at least 10 times since the early 1990s. The regiment's last deployment was in November of 2013.
In the year of 1989, a devastating earthquake struck the central California coast. The shaking was so violent and powerful that it left entire neighborhoods flattened and leveled entire villages. Hillsborough was one of those villages. The death toll from the earthquake topped 100,000 people, making it one of the deadliest disasters in California history. Many of the buildings that were destroyed in the quake were from years ago and had not been touched since. The community is still recovering today as they rebuild their lives after such an event. Hillsborough is located about 20 miles west-northwest of downtown San Francisco on a small peninsula surrounded by salt water on three sides. The peninsula was formed when two major tectonic plates collided during a period known asthe North American Plate convergence zone. This collision created significant amounts of stress which then pushed up elevation over time until finally forming this barrier island that lies between San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean waters to our north and east respectively (1). Since its founding in 1853, Hillsborough has been home to many notable residents including Governor John D’Arcy “Dutch” Ellis, Ulysses S Grant Wood Jr., Edwin Ladd, Betty Ford Smith, Dick Button and numerous others (2). Today there are approximately 10% aboriginal people living in hillsborough who descended from indigenous peoples who inhabited this area for thousands of years before European settlement (3). Hillsborough is also home to several elementary schools – Haight-Ashbury Elementary School District #1; East Palo Alto Unified School District #2; Westlake Intermediate School District #3; Castro Valley Middle School District #4; Goodwin Middle School District #5 – along with many other businesses which have contributed to its success including Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations (4) as well as several parks including Presidio Park which includes portions of Fort Point National Monument as well as portions of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (5)

Hillsborough, California is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 18,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Hillsborough" is derived from Spanish and English words meaning "hillocks." The first people to live in Hillsborough were the Bidwells who ranched on land that now includes much of the eastern end of town. A post office called Hillsborough was established in 1875, and remained in operation until 1907. The town started as a small farming community with some buildings and outbuildings still standing today. In 1902, the United States Post Office moved from its original location east of town to present day Hillsborough when part of what was then Kern County became statehood. In 1911, a water tower and pump station were built in downtown for irrigation purposes; these facilities remain operational today. In 1927, construction began on what would become one of the most important infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Kern County – the new State Route 66 which linked Los Angeles with San Bernardino County. This road would later be renamed Interstate 5 after it was completed in 1975. I-5 brought many people to Hillsborough including movie stars such as Cary Grant and Rock Hudson as well as local business owners who saw an opportunity to expand their businesses into this new county seat. Many homes were built along I-5 during this time and are still standing today; some have been restored and are open for tours by visitors interested in learning more about early growth within Kern County’s largest city! In recent years there has been much development take place within the limits of town - both positive (such as growth around the existing watertower) and negative (such as developments near Interstate 5). However, it remains an interesting place to visit regardless of its current state!
Hillsborough was founded in 1849 by John F. Hills and his wife, Elizabeth. The first post office was established in 1850, and the first school was built in 1852. In 1860, the town had a population of 25 people and was named for General James A. Hill, who led Union troops during the American Civil War. The town changed its name to Hillsborough in 1865 when it became part of Fresno County. In 1969, Hillsborough merged with other towns in Fresno County to form the city of Fresno.
