Hillsborough, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Fresno and about 30 miles (48 km) north of Stockton. Hillsborough is part of the Fresno–Kingsburg metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Hillsborough were Spanish traders and missionaries who stopped there on their way from Sacramento to Monterey in 1769. The first permanent residents were Mormon settlers from South America who arrived in 1847. They named the community after General James Henshaw Hill, an American Revolutionary War hero who had been born in Middlesex County, England and died in North America at age 54 years, 5 months and 21 days. The original downtown business district consisted of a few stores and two post office buildings on Main Street near where it intersects Tulare Avenue today. A three-story schoolhouse was built on what is now Elmira Road between 1852 and 1854, but it burned down soon after being erected. A new school was built on what later became Main Street between 1865 and 1870 by subscription among local farmers under the leadership of Mrs. Jnoeph Purdy. A five-story frame building with square tower was added to this structure around 1898 by architects John Lubbock and George Stephenson Smith for use as a courthouse which served as the town's seat until 1907 when that structure burned down also. A new courthouse was constructed on High Street near where it splits into three branches today between 1912 and 1916 by architects Arthur Whelan Wright Jr., Harry Hecht, Jr., William Weisman Miller & Son Incorporated; it served as both the town's chief law enforcement officer until 1959 when that function was transferred to Fresno County sheriff's office under then county Supervisor Donahue; it has since been used as a storage facility before being retired to its present location adjacent to Highway 99 just south of Gibsonville Park off High Street near Interstate 5 exit #242 in 2016 A significant early effort at civic responsibility came with establishment in 1898 of an agricultural fair including rides, games, demonstrations etc.; subsequent occurrences every year or so led to erection over time of several large brick bungalows (now known as "Hillsborough Halls") within city limits serving various purposes such as library/community center/dentist clinic/warehouse combination up until 1977 when they were razed due to lack of patronage following enactment by then-Mayor Domenico Bruno (D) of anti-trust laws prohibiting businesses within city limits from engaging in cooperative marketing activities prohibited by then-City Charter §7(c). In 1978 streetcars began running through town providing service along both Elmira Road [now main thoroughfare] eastward from downtown via First Avenue [now Jackson Boulevard] towards Stockton through Kingman Park thence southeastward along Jackson Boulevard past Kernwood Cemetery before terminating at I-5 southbound just outside Gibsonville Park

Hillsborough is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. It is the most populous city on the East Coast of North America. The Census Bureau estimated that Hillsborough had a population of 343,512 as of 2017. In 1846, the town was established by Captain John C. Fremont and his men who were searching for a new home after leaving Bear Valley in Oregon. The City was named for General James H. Hill who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became Governor of California under Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal coalition government. The first post office was established in 1847, but it did not open until 1850 because of problems with receiving mail from outlying settlements at that time. The first store opened in 1853 and the first school in 1855. By 1861, Hillsborough had a population of over 100 people and 10 businesses including two banks and three stores). In 1863, the United States Post Office built its present building which remains standing today (it replaced an older structure that burned down). In 1865, Hillsborough voted to become part of Richmond City Limits due to overcrowding within Contra Costa County caused by burgeoning agriculture and mines development along the coast .
